UW-Oshkosh accounted for 14 of the 20 spots on the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Men's Soccer All-Time Team. The league selected these premier players as part of its centennial anniversary celebration.
The 14 Titans chosen played in the past 24 years. Six of them were NCAA Division III All-Americans, including Matt Boehnen (2001), Jack Borski (2010), Scott Deopere (1999-2000), Roberto Gutierrez (1994), Derek Kasten (2003) and Shane Lohr (2003). They are joined on the squad by the WIAC's All-Time Coach, Toby Bares. Bares guided UW-Oshkosh from 1984-2009.
Eight other Titans made the team, including Ryan Dineen (Brookfield • Brookfield Central High School) (2001-04), Brad Haga (Neenah • Neenah High School) (2000-03), Greg Henschel (Elm Grove • Brookfield East High School) (1991-94), Will Howell (Waunakee • Home Schooled) (2006-09), C.J. Lipinski (New Berlin • New Berlin West High School) (2003-05), Mark Pawlyshyn (Fridley, Minn. • Totino-Grace High School) (1988-91), Mitch Poppen (Fridley, Minn. • Burnsville High School) (1990-93) and Robin Rameker (1993-96). Each of these men was voted All-Region at least twice by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Deopere (Rock Island, Ill. • Rock Island High School) is the leading scorer in UW-Oshkosh history with 74 goals and 173 points. He was the NCAA Division III Player of the Year in 2000, while also making the All-America team in 1999. Deopere was a part of UW-Oshkosh teams that compiled a 60-17-4 record.
Kasten (Greenfield • Whitnall High School) and Lohr (New Berlin • New Berlin West High School) both received All-America honors in 2003 when the Titans compiled a 21-1 record and reached the NCAA Division III Final Four. Lohr, who was also an all-region pick in 2002, was on the 2000 UW-Oshkosh squad that reached the national semifinals. Boehnen (Verona • Verona High School) helped the Titans to three postseason appearances from 1999-2001.
Gutierrez (Milwaukee • Milwaukee Thomas More High School) was a three-time all-region selection. His senior year of 1994 remains the only undefeated season (18-0-3) in school history. Rameker (De Pere • De Pere High School) was also on that team, as was Henschel. Henschel, now the head coach at UW-Whitewater, ranks second in UW-Oshkosh history with 55 goals and 143 points.
Men's soccer became a WIAC championship sport in 2009, so Borski and Howell are the Titans who played in league matches. Borski (Madison • Madison West High School) was an All-American in 2010, while also gaining all-region honors in 2008 and 2009. Howell was named all-region three times (2007-09), becoming the fourth Titan to accomplish the feat.
Bares received the 1994 NCAA Division III Coach of the Year award. His career record of 344-99-39 and winning percentage of .754 place him among the all-time leaders in the NCAA. Bares guided the Titans to 11 postseason appearances, including NCAA Division III Final Four visits in 1994, 2000 and 2003.
The remaining four players on the WIAC All-Time Team were B.J. Gottschlich (2007-10) and Jim Jianette (1982-84) of UW-Platteville, Jon Bell (2008-11) of UW-Superior and Luke Buchholz (2007-09), Matt Gehn (2006-09) and Ryan Richgels (2007-10) of UW-Whitewater.
The WIAC is recognizing the outstanding individuals from the league's 100-year history. All-time teams are being selected in those men's and women's sports that have been classified as "championship" sports at some point since 1913. Additional teams will be released on a weekly basis throughout much of the 2011-12 academic year.
All-time team members will receive certificates from the conference and it is hoped that most, if not all, of the recipients will be in attendance or represented at the WIAC Centennial Banquet in Madison on Aug. 4, 2012.
