21st-Ranked Warhawks Fly Away From Titans

Bobby Brooks (So. • Neenah) and Kevin Lewis (So. • Howard) upset a regionally ranked doubles squad during UW-Oshkosh's 8-1 loss to the UW-Whitewater men's tennis team on Saturday (Feb. 11) in Elkhorn.

Brooks and Lewis raised their season record to 4-0 by posting a 9-8 victory over Byron Balkin and Mitch Osborne in the top doubles flight. Balkin and Osborne entered the contest ranked ninth in the NCAA Division III Central Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

UW-Whitewater (2-1), which is ranked 21st nationally, built a 2-1 lead after the doubles competition. The Warhawks then swept all six singles matches, including Balkin's 6-4, 4-6 (10-8) triumph over Brooks in the highest flight.

Picking up doubles wins for UW-Whitewater were Andrew Bayliss and Andy McGlashen in the second flight and Kevin Friend and Erik Scanlan in the third. Bayliss and McGlashen defeated Adam Kasper (Jr. • Franklin) and Aidan Sauberlich (Fr. • Green Bay), 8-2, while Friend and Scanlan ousted Josh Hopfensperger (So. • Neenah) and Scott Niemi (Sr. • Appleton), 8-5.

In singles play, UW-Oshkosh won six games in the second flight and five in both the fourth and sixth. Lewis dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision to Bayliss at No. 2 singles, while Sauberlich lost a 6-4, 6-1 result to Osborne at No. 4. Jason Alexander (So. • Fond du Lac) dropped a 6-3, 6-2 verdict to Brian Klein at No. 6 singles. UW-Whitewater received its remaining singles victories from McGlashen in the second flight and Scanlan in the fifth. McGlashen marked a 6-0, 6-1 win over Niemi and Scanlan a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Kasper.

UW-Oshkosh (0-4) returns to the court with matches against Coe College (Iowa) and Loras College (Iowa) on Saturday (Feb. 18) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
