Titans Split Matches With Iowa Foes

UW-Oshkosh earned its first men's tennis victory of the 2012 season when it split matches with Coe College (Iowa) and Loras College (Iowa) on Saturday (Feb. 18) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

UW-Oshkosh (1-5) began its activity with a 9-0 loss to Coe College (5-0). The Kohawks lost only one set in singles play and just eight games in doubles action.

UW-Oshkosh's best effort against Coe College came at No. 5 singles, where Adam Kasper (Jr. • Franklin) dropped 6-7, 6-0 (10-0) decision to Curtis Newman.

The Titans also had Scott Niemi (Sr. • Appleton) lose a 7-5, 6-3 decision to Jeff Damisch at No. 4 singles and Kevin Lewis (So. • Howard) a 6-4, 6-1 result to Noah Sprinkel at No. 2 singles.

Coe College picked up its remaining victories in singles play from Victor Khristenko, Sean Stokstad and Jonathan Roger. Khristenko defeated Bobby Brooks (So. • Neenah) by a 7-5, 6-0 score in the first flight, while Stokstad ousted Aidan Sauberlich (Fr. • Green Bay) by a 6-3, 6-1 outcome in the third. Roger beat Jason Alexander (So. • Fond du Lac) by a 6-1, 6-3 ruling in the sixth flight.

Coe College had a pair of 8-2 wins in doubles play as Newman and Sprinkel defeated Brooks and Lewis in the first flight and Khristenko and Michael Woolf banished Kasper and Sauberlich in the second. At No. 3 doubles, Damisch and Stokstad topped Niemi and Josh Hopfensperger (So. • Neenah), 8-4.

UW-Oshkosh bounced back for a 9-0 win over Loras College (0-3) in the nightcap. The Titans lost only 13 games as they went 72-10 in singles play and 24-3 in doubles action.

Posting 6-0, 6-0 wins for UW-Oshkosh in singles play were Lewis in the second flight, Niemi in the fourth and Alexander in the fifth. Lewis shutout John Keane, while Niemi blanked Tyler Livingston and Alexander silenced Justin Steines.

Other UW-Oshkosh victories in singles action came from Brooks in the first flight, Sauberlich in the third and Kinan Al-Bitar (So. • Oshkosh) in the sixth. Brooks tallied a 6-4, 6-2 win over Jonathan Moore, while Sauberlich marked a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Jeff Kasel. Al-Bitar had little difficulty in recording a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Garrett Prusha.

All three doubles contests were 8-1 wins for the Titans. Brooks and Lewis defeated Livingston and Moore in the first flight, while Kasper and Sauberlich ousted Keane and Steines in the second. Hopfensperger and Niemi won the third flight over Kasel and Jack O'Brien.

UW-Oshkosh is off until it hosts Carthage College and Lawrence University on March 3 at the Oshkosh YMCA Tennis Center.
