Kevin Lewis (So. • Howard) and Aidan Sauberlich (Fr. • Green Bay) each contributed to three victories as the UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team defeated Augustana College (Ill.) and fell to Grinnell College (Iowa) on Saturday (March 10) in Moline, Ill.
The Titans (3-7) posted their win over Augustana College (7-4) by a 6-3 tally. Grinnell College (7-3) earned a 6-3 decision over UW-Oshkosh in the first match of the day.
Competing at No. 2 singles, Lewis marked a 6-3, 6-3 singles triumph over Grinnell College's Eric Ritter and a 6-2, 6-1 win against Augustana College's Lawrence Palmer.
Teaming with Bobby Brooks (So. • Neenah) at No. 1 doubles, Lewis took part in an 8-6 win over Augustana College's Adam DeSimone and Andy Wall and an 8-1 loss to Grinnell College's Elliott Czarnecki and Michael Cole.
Sauberlich's success at No. 3 singles featured a 6-1, 6-2 result over Grinnell's Benjamin Charney and a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 decision over Augustana College's Wall.
Sauberlich and Adam Kasper (Jr. • Franklin) went 1-1 at No. 2 doubles, winning 8-6 over Lawrence Palmer and William Palmer of Augustana College and losing 8-6 to Charney and Ishan Bhadkamkar of Grinnell College.
UW-Oshkosh's remaining team point against Grinnell College came from Josh Hopfensperger (So. • Neenah) and Scott Niemi (Sr. • Appleton) at No. 3 doubles. The Titan duo posted a 9-8 win over Colin Johnson and Aaron Lapkin.
Grinnell College concluded the match with wins by Czarnecki at No. 1 singles, Daniel Nellis at No. 4 singles, Bhadkamkar at No 5 singles and Cole at No. 6 singles. Czarnecki defeated Brooks, 6-4, 6-3, while Nellis ousted Scott Niemi (Sr. • Appleton), 6-1, 6-1. Bhadkamkar had a 6-0, 6-4 win over Kasper and Cole a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Jason Alexander (So. • Fond du Lac).
Against Augustana College, UW-Oshkosh collected additional singles wins from Brooks in the first flight and Alexander in the sixth. Brooks notched a 7-6, 6-2 victory over DeSimone and Alexander a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Grant Wick.
Augustana College completed its team points on wins by Colin Arnold at No. 4 singles, Kevin Bayles at No. 5 singles and Arnold and Jack Cullen at No. 3 doubles. Arnold defeated Niemi, 6-4, 6-3, while Bayles ousted Kasper, 6-2, 6-1. Arnold and Cullen scored an 8-4 triumph over Hopfensperger and Niemi.
The Titans will play five straight days in Florida, opening against North Central College (Ill.) on Sunday (March 18) in Orlando.
