Pioneers Knock Off Titans

Kevin Lewis (So. • Howard) and Aidan Sauberlich (Fr. • Green Bay) each captured their 10th singles win of the year during UW-Oshkosh's 6-3 loss to the Carroll University men's tennis team on Friday (March 30) in Waukesha.

Both Lewis and Sauberlich improved to 10-6 on the season, as they notched the Titans' two singles victories. Lewis counted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Mathew Zellner in the second flight, while Sauberlich took down Kevin Rasmussen, 6-4, 6-2, in the third.

UW-Oshkosh's (6-10) third team point came at No. 3 doubles. Josh Hopfensperger (So. • Neenah) and Scott Niemi (Sr. • Appleton) held on for an 8-6 victory over Frankie Giuffre and Matthew Joost.

Niemi and Bobby Brooks (So. • Neenah) took their singles matches to a third set before falling. Brooks dropped a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 result to Jack Michael in the first flight, while Niemi suffered a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 loss to Ryne Fertitta in the fourth.

Both the first and second doubles contests were close. Zellner and John Silseth came away with a 9-7 triumph over Brooks and Lewis in the first flight. Fertitta then teamed with Michael for a 9-8 success against Sauberlich and Adam Kasper (Jr. • Franklin) in the second flight.

Carroll University (5-3) rounded out its team scoring on wins by Silseth at No. 5 singles and Giuffre at No. 6 singles. Silseth posted a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Jason Alexander (So. • Fond du Lac), while Giuffre marked a 6-2, 7-5 triumph over Hopfensperger.

UW-Oshkosh meets Ripon College and St. Norbert College on Saturday (March 31) at the Oshkosh YMCA Tennis Center.
