Kinan Al-Bitar (Jr. • Oshkosh) was victorious in the ninth and final contest as the UW-Oshkosh opened its spring trip with a 5-4 win over the University of Puget Sound (Wash.) men's tennis team on Monday (March 18) in Orlando, Fla.
Al-Bitar was one of three individual winners for the Titans (6-6). His decisive match at No. 6 singles featured a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Michael Tieu.
UW-Oshkosh also received wins from Kevin Lewis (Jr. • Howard) at No. 1 singles and Mike Gillespie (So. • De Pere) at No. 4. Lewis defeated Michael Cutter, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, while Gillespie ousted Daniel Deuel, 6-1, 6-0.
The Loggers (1-8) earned their three individual victories from Graham Baker in the second flight, Jake Peterson in the fourth and John Stevens in the fifth. Baker edged Aidan Sauberlich (So. • Green Bay), 6-3, 2-6, 6-1, while Peterson beat Adam Kasper (Sr. • Franklin), 6-2, 7-5. Stevens tallied a 6-1, 6-3 win over Alex Yang (Fr. • Milwaukee).
UW-Oshkosh earned its remaining team points on victories by Lewis and Bobby Brooks (Jr. • Neenah) at No. 1 doubles and Gillespie and Sauberlich at No. 2 doubles. Lewis and Brooks defeated Baker and Cutter, 8-4, while Gillespie and Sauberlich outscored Deuel and Peterson, 8-5.
Stevens and Tieu salvaged the Loggers' only victory in doubles play with a 9-7 win over Kasper and Charlie Bostwick (Fr. • Whitefish Bay) in the third flight.
UW-Oshkosh remains in Orlando to play Hope College (Mich.) on Tuesday (March 19).
