The difference was in doubles play as St. Norbert College built a 2-1 advantage and held on for a 5-4 victory over the UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team on Friday (April 12) at the Oshkosh YMCA Tennis Center.
St. Norbert College (6-9) took the early lead on wins by Nick Acosta and Tim Hartwick in the first flight of doubles action and Travis Buechel and Nate Gosz in the third flight. Both tandems won by 8-6 scores, with Acosta and Hartwick defeating Bobby Brooks (Jr. • Neenah) and Kevin Lewis (Jr. • Howard) and Buechel and Gosz ousting Charlie Bostwick (Fr. • Whitefish Bay) and Adam Kasper (Sr. • Franklin).
UW-Oshkosh's lone doubles victory came in the second flight, where Mike Gillespie (So. • De Pere) and Aidan Sauberlich (So. • Green Bay) beat Casey Brice and Matt Lobeck, 8-3.
UW-Oshkosh (9-10) owned the winner in the top three levels of singles play. Lewis posted a 6-3, 3-6 (10-8) victory over Lobeck in the first flight, while Sauberlich marked a 6-1, 7-5 win over Hartwick in the second. Gillespie contributed a 7-6, 6-4 triumph over Acosta in the third.
St. Norbert College, which snapped a 22-match losing streak to UW-Oshkosh, received individual wins from Buechel in the fourth flight, Josh Sweere in the fifth and Gosz in the sixth.
Buechel defeated Kasper, 7-6, 6-1, while Sweere outscored Alex Yang (Fr. • Milwaukee), 7-5, 6-4. Gosz recorded a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Ross Kohlhase (Jr. • Green Bay).
UW-Oshkosh travels to UW-Whitewater for a match next Friday (April 19).
