UW-Oshkosh football offensive lineman
John Schirger was selected to the 2024 Associated Press (AP) NCAA Division III All-America Football Second Team on Thursday (Dec. 19), earning his second All-America honor of the year.
Â
Schirger (Sr. • Grafton) is the sixth Titan to earn All-America status from the AP and the second since the AP moved to its current division-based system.
Â
Schirger started all 10 games for UW-Oshkosh in 2024. He anchored an offense that rushed for at least 126 yards four times during the season while allowing just 43 tackles-for-loss and 19 sacks against NCAA Division III opponents and 28 and nine respectively against WIAC programs.
Â
The offensive tackle and the Titan offense put up a season high 167 rushing yards and two touchdowns on a ground in a 28-21 overtime win over then-ranked No. 21/16 Linfield University (Ore.) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium on Sept. 14. The Titans allowed just one tackle for loss twice this season; at UW-Stevens Point on Oct. 26 and against UW-Stout at home on Nov. 9. They also recorded a clean sack sheet four times, including the Pointer and Blue Devil matchups as well as home games against Division II Michigan Tech on Sept. 21 and UW-Platteville on Oct. 19.
Â
Previously this season, Schirger was named to the American Football Coaches Association All-America First Team, the D3football.com All-Region 6 Second Team, and All-WIAC First Team.
Â
Schirger was joined by UW-Whitewater's Matt Burba and UW-Stout's Luke Cool on the second team as the only student-athletes from the WIAC among the 58 total selections on this year's AP Division III All-America Team.
Â
Prior to 2017, the AP announced a Little All-America Team that included players from NCAA Divisions II and III in addition to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.
Â
The AP Little America Team previously honored former Titan linebacker Reese Dziedzic (Third Team, 2016), quarterback Brett Kasper (First Team, 2017), punter Nate Ray (Second Team, 2014) and offensive lineman Ty Summers (First Team, 2017). Jaydon Haag (Second, 2019) collected UW-Oshkosh's first AP Division III All-America honor.
