Titans Defeated Twice In Marian Triangular

Joely Schelfhout recorded 14 tackles and two interceptions to go with 48 offensive yards on Sunday

FOND DU LAC, Wis.- UW-Oshkosh women's flag football played its first-ever road games on Sunday (March 22), facing Marian University and Illinois Wesleyan University on the Sabres' Smith Field. The Titans lost both contests by respective scores of 22-0 and 53-0.

In Sunday's first game, Oshkosh (0-3) accumulated two first downs to Marian's (3-1) 10 and totaled 57 total offensive yards to the Sabres' 197.

Marian held additional advantages in rushing yards (60 to -15), passing yards (137-72), and sacks (1-0).

The Titans intercepted three passes for 12 return yards while Marian picked off Oshkosh twice for 79 return yards and a touchdown.

Jaia Carson (Cross Plains/Middleton) completed eight of 24 passing attempts for 72 yards with a long of 46 yards to Joely Schelfhout (Oshkosh/Oshkosh West), who paced all players with eight tackles, including a tackle-for-loss, and snagged two of the Titans' interceptions.

Aliana Rauter (Milwaukee/Ronald Reagan) and Sophia Lee (Cottage Grove/Monona Grove) also reached double-digit receiving yards with 11 each and Jamaya Mariner (Green Bay/Green Bay East) led Oshkosh with 10 rushing yards on three attempts.

Marin Bell (Oshkosh/Oshkosh West) recorded nine punts for 276 yards, averaging 30.7 yards per kick.

Marian won the coin toss before the teams traded punts in their first possessions of the game.

The Sabres struck for their first touchdown just inside three minutes remaining in the first quarter.

Following another Oshkosh punt, Marian marched down to the Titans' 4-yard line before Mariner jumped in front of Holly Goodwin's pass for her first career interception.

Pinned deep in their own territory, the Titans allowed a safety to make the score 9-0 with 9:15 remaining in the first quarter.

Marian scored again at 5:41 and converted the 1-point conversion for a 16-0 lead.

Schelfhout intercepted a deep pass by Goodwin and brought the ball out to Oshkosh's 20 before her flag was pulled. The Titans went three-and-out and punted the ball back to the Sabres, who again threw the ball the Schelfhout for her second pick in four minutes of play.

After another Titan punt, Marian had the ball through the end of the third quarter. Ashlyn Clemens (Colombia, Mo./Rock Bridge) came up with a fourth down stop early in the fourth period and Carson connected with Schelfhout at midfield, who looked like she was headed to the end zone before a Marian defender caught up with her inside the Sabres' 20-yard line. Carson was picked off on third down by Raegan Montello, who took the ball Crossfield for a score.

Carson was picked off once more and both teams punted in the last six minutes of the game.

UW-Oshkosh and Illinois Wesleyan (4-2) played in the game immediately after the Titans and Sabres finished the triangular's opener.

UW-Oshkosh had six first downs in the game and totaled 66 passing yards, averaging 7.3 yards per completion.

Illinois Wesleyan collected nine first downs with 254 total yards of offense (145 rushing, 109 passing) and picked off Carson four times against one interception of IWU's quarterback for Clemens.

Carson went 9-for-29 under center for 29 yards and Marin Bell (Oshkosh/Oshkosh West) went 0-for-3. Adding to Carson's four picks, she was sacked twice and Bell once.

Kyana Williams (Oshkosh/Oshkosh West) led Oshkosh's rushing attack with 12 yards on one attempt.

Mariner paced Oshkosh with 24 receiving yards on two catches. Rauter caught two passes for 14 yards and Aaliyah Lathrop (Port Washington/Port Washington) had 14 yards on one reception.

Schelfhout again recorded a game-high in tackles (6) while Kyana Williams (Oshkosh/Oshkosh West) and Paige Vitek (Raymond/Union Grove) followed with five each. Clemens was all over the field in the contest, recording five pass breakups to go with two tackles and her interception.

Bell punted an additional five times against Illinois Wesleyan, totaling 138 yards.

Clemens picked off Illinois Wesleyan quarterback Emma Canigila inside the 20-yard line in the Illinois Titans' first possession of the game. Down to fourth down outside the 20 after a false start penalty, Carson found Rauter wide open in the middle of the field, who evaded four defenders before losing her balance at Illinois Wesleyan's 15 for the turnover on downs.

After forcing an Illinois Wesleyan punt, Carson threw a pick-six in front of the Titans' end zone before IWU converted the two-point attempt for an 8-0 lead. She threw another interception in the following possession and IWU went up 16-0 with 3:14 remaining in the first quarter with another two-point conversion.

A third-straight interception for Carson was kept out of the end zone when Vitek pulled the returner's flag, however Canigila found a wide-open Aishah Smith in the end zone with 1:18 left in the period.

The Titans punted in their first possession of the second quarter and Illinois Wesleyan ate up more than five minutes of the clock before scoring yet again. The conversion was no good and IWU led 29-0 with 4:55 left in the second quarter.

Taking over at their own 14-yard line, the Titans crossed into Illinois Wesleyan's territory as the two-minute warning stopped the clock but were forced to punt. However, Bell dropped her punt inside the 5-yard line and Oshkosh's defense forced a three-and-out to induce an Illinois Wesleyan punt that Rauter returned to the 40-yard line. Oshkosh turned the ball over on downs just before halftime.

Illinois Wesleyan scored twice in a third quarter than Oshkosh did not reach the opposite side of the field and on the second play of the fourth quarter to take a 47-0 edge.

The Titans did not pass the 40 in the fourth quarter and Illinois Wesleyan tacked on three more points on a rush to the end zone with two seconds remaining.

The Titans will return to Oshkosh for their next game, hosting Rockford University (Ill.) (2-1) in the UW-Oshkosh Rec Plex Dome on April 4 at 4 p.m.
