Titans Slay Knights To Remain Unbeaten

Goals in the opening minutes of each half propelled the UW-Oshkosh men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Carleton College (Minn.) on Sunday (Oct. 24) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

UW-Oshkosh, which entered the contest ranked 12th in the NCAA Division III by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, took a 1-0 lead when Tony Starnes (So. • Green Bay) scored off a pass from Mike Franzen (Sr. • Sussex) in the eighth minute (7:06) of play. It was the seventh goal of the season for Starnes.

UW-Oshkosh (16-0-2) extended its advantage to 2-0 when Ryan Hanna (Fr. • Verona) scored his fifth goal of the season off a serve from Nick Laubenstein (Fr. • Howard) in the 50th minute (49:17).

UW-Oshkosh totaled 10 shots and nine corner kicks. The Titans were led by the three shots of Franzen and the two of Hanna.

Carleton College (10-5-1) was held to four shots and five corner kicks. The Knights, who share first place in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, were paced by the two shots of Will Corcoran.

Goalkeepers James Pike (Jr. • Wauwatosa) and Tim Gindville (Sr. • New Lenox, Ill.) combined for UW-Oshkosh's 15th shutout of the season. Pike saved one shot in 85 minutes of work, while Gindville went without a save in five minutes of duty.

Carleton College goalkeeper Pete Semmer played the entire match and saved three shots.

Sunday's match was the first between the two teams since 1998. UW-Oshkosh has won all three contests in the series, all by a shutout.

UW-Oshkosh plays sixth-ranked UW-Whitewater (12-1-2) for the WIAC championship on Saturday (Oct. 30) in Whitewater.
