Box Score Tony Starnes (So. • Green Bay) opened and closed the scoring as the UW-Oshkosh men's soccer team defeated Marian University, 4-0, on Wednesday (Sept. 22) in Fond du Lac.
Starnes gave UW-Oshkosh (7-0-1) a quick 1-0 lead when he scored off a pass from Brian Miller (Sr. • Chippewa Falls) just 3:44 into the contest. The two players then repeated their scoring action in the game's 70th minute (69:33) as Miller fed Starnes for the Titans' fourth goal.
UW-Oshkosh's third goal belonged to Miller as he took a pass from Mike Franzen (Sr. • Sussex) and sailed a shot into the net in the 69th minute (68:22).
The Titans, ranked 20th in the NCAA Division III by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, went ahead 2-0 on Nick Laubenstein's (Fr. • Howard) goal in the 47th minute (46:25). Credited with an assist on Laubenstein's goal were Ryan Hanna (Fr. • Verona) and Tim Stadler (Jr. • Wauwatosa).
UW-Oshkosh, which has won 25 of its 26 matches against Marian University, totaled 26 shots and six corner kicks. Brandon Briones (Sr. • Menasha) attempted seven shots to lead the Titans, while Miller and Starnes launched four each.
Marian University (2-5) was held to seven shots and three corner kicks. The Sabres were led by the two shots of both Rob Ogden and Luke Peltonen.
UW-Oshkosh shared its goalkeeping duties between James Pike (Jr. • Wauwatosa) and Tim Gindville (Sr. • New Lenox, Ill.). Pike recorded one save in 60:31, while Gindville went without a save in 29:29.
Marian University goalkeeper Tim Wszalek played the entire contest and saved seven shots.
UW-Oshkosh returns to J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium on Saturday (Sept. 25) to host Saint Mary's University (Minn.).
