Box Score UW-Oshkosh scored six goals in the first 35 minutes and coasted to a 7-0 victory over the Marian University men's soccer team on Wednesday (Sept. 14) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.
Hans Becker (Fr. • Madison) did the most damage for the Titans (2-1-1) by scoring a pair of goals and assisting on another. Becker gave UW-Oshkosh a quick 1-0 advantage when he headed a cross from Tony Starnes (Jr. • Green Bay) into the net just 37 seconds into play. Becker then increased the Titans' lead to 3-0 when he scored an assisted goal by Robby Giljohann (Sr. • Brookfield) and Tim Stadler (Sr. • Wauwatosa) in the 24th minute (23:28) of action.
Starnes and Giljohann also took part in UW-Oshkosh's scoring parade with goals in the 26th (25:30) and 34th (33:50) minute of play. Starnes put the Titans ahead 4-0 with an assisted goal from Giljohann and Stadler, while Giljohann put UW-Oshkosh in front 5-0 with an assisted goal from Chris Kurth (So. • Green Bay) and Evan Maly (Sr. • Neenah). Maly later scored off a pass from Becker to give the Titans a 6-0 lead in the 35th minute (34:55) of activity.
UW-Oshkosh's other goals were scored in the eighth minute (7:05) by Danny Karrels (Fr. • Port Washington) and in the 89th (88:55) by Ryan Redmond (Lake Elmo, Minn.). Karrels' unassisted goal gave the Titans a 2-0 lead, while Redmond's assisted goal by Carlos Alcantara (Fr. • Minneapolis, Minn.) and Erik White (So. • East Troy) closed UW-Oshkosh's scoring.
UW-Oshkosh, ranked 17th in the NCAA Division III by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, attacked Marian University with 27 shots and five corner kicks. A total of 12 players attempted shots for the Titans, including Giljohann who launched six and Starnes who dispatched four.
Marian University (0-3-1) was held to five shots, with two of them belonging to David Reinke. The Sabres, who suffered their 13th straight loss to the Titans, went without a corner kick opportunity.
Goalkeepers James Pike (Sr. • Wauwatosa), Taylor Zyvoloski (Fr. • Port Washington) and Nick Barry (Fr. • Wheaton, Ill.) shared the shutout for the Titans. Pike saved one shot in 45 minutes of action, while Zyvoloski saved one shot in 22 minutes of service. Barry went unchallenged during his 23 minutes of play.
Marian University split its goalkeeping duty as Nathan Thiery allowed six goals and saved nine shots in the first half while Tim Wszalek allowed one goal and saved two shots in the second. The Sabres also had a defender save a UW-Oshkosh shot.
UW-Oshkosh begins WIAC play at UW-Superior on Saturday (Sept. 17).
