Overtime Goal Puts Titans In WIAC Title Game

Box Score

Tony Starnes scored with 28 seconds left in the second overtime as UW-Oshkosh pulled out a 2-1 victory over UW-Platteville in a semifinal round contest of the WIAC Men's Soccer Championship held Wednesday (Nov. 6) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

Starnes, who owns a team-leading nine goals on the season, recorded the game-winner off a 30-yard pass from Karl Bock. The ball came in from the left side off the Bock pass and Starnes drilled a shot into the net from two yards out.

The triumph advances UW-Oshkosh (15-0-4) to the tournament's championship game on Friday (Nov. 8) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium. The Titans will host UW-Superior (11-6-3), which held on a 2-1 road victory over UW-Whitewater on Wednesday.

UW-Platteville (7-9-3) took the lead over UW-Oshkosh on Mbodje Sarr's goal during the 20th minute (19:55) of play. His 10-yard kick came off a serve from Michael Prudisch.

The Pioneers held their one-goal advantage until UW-Platteville goalkeeper Ian Christensen tackled UW-Oshkosh's Jan Nachtigall in the penalty box with 40 seconds (44:20) remaining in the first half. Nachtigall then converted the penalty kick for his eighth goal of the season.

UW-Oshkosh attempted 19 shots, including nine in the first half and six in the second. The five shots from Kirby Allen, three from Starnes and two each from Nachtigall, Faisal Bah, Chris Kurth and Jonathan Stanley led the Titans.

UW-Platteville, which lost a 3-1 decision to UW-Oshkosh on Oct. 27, launched 13 shots. The Pioneers attempted five shots in the first half and six in the first overtime session. William Pretto and Jon Stopple both fired three shots for UW-Platteville.

UW-Oshkosh, which entered the match ranked fifth in the NCAA Division III by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, earned six of the game's nine corner kicks.

Both goalkeepers were busy as Sam Gabrilska saved seven shots for UW-Oshkosh and Christensen six for UW-Platteville. A defender stopped a shot for each team.

UW-Oshkosh has won 10 straight contests since playing to a 1-1 double-overtime tie with UW-Superior on Sept. 28 at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.
