Titans Fend Off Yellowjackets

With a 3-1 victory over UW-Superior, the UW-Oshkosh women's volleyball team extended its winning streak to nine games, the longest since 2009.

The Titans improved to 2-0 in WIAC play after beating the Yellow Jackets in four sets by scores of 20-25, 25-20, 25-17 and 25-22 on Saturday (Sept. 21) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Superior grabbed a commanding 14-6 lead in the first set. The Titans were able to claw back to within four but the Yellow Jackets shut the door to take a 1-0 lead.

Down 8-6 the Titans went on a run in the second set and took a 15-11 lead before UW-Superior tied the game at 15 apiece. UW-Oshkosh scored six of the final 7 points and tied the match up at 1-1.

The Titans scored seven in a row with Hayley Rickmeier serving to lead 7-4 in the third set. The Yellow Jackets kept it close but UW-Oshkosh scored eight out of 10 to go up 23-15.

Behind Jessica Fischer's serve, the Titans scored eight consecutive points to take a 12-4 in the final set. UW-Superior answered with an 11-4 run of its own. UW-Oshkosh was able to edge out the Yellow Jackets in the rest of the back-and-forth set to seal the match.

Katelyn Malcheski, who had 17 kills, led the Titans offensively. Rickmeier had 7 service aces throughout the match while Alexis Thiel and Alison Tomczyk had 22 and 18 assists, respectively. Mandy Trautmann led the Titans with 24 digs.

Keely Deadrick had 41 assists in the match for UW-Superior. Brooke Vonasek led the Yellow Jackets with 15 kills while Kitty Tynen added 13 more. UW-Superior had five players with at least 9 digs.

The Titans out hit the Yellow Jackets .264 to .199 while hitting .300 in the third set and .375 in the final set.

Next on the schedule for UW-Oshkosh is a matchup at Dominican University (Ill.). The Stars reached the NCAA tournament last season before falling to St. Benedict in the opening round.

The Titans won't play at home again until Oct. 16 as part of an eight game road trip.
