Top-Ranked Pointers Defeat Titans To Remain Unbeaten

Tyler Tillema scored 20-plus points for the 10th time this season as top-ranked UW-Stevens Point remained unbeaten with a 58-30 victory over the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team on Wednesday (Jan. 15) in Stevens Point.

Tillema totaled a game-high 20 points by making 8-of-12 shots from the field and both free throws. He grabbed seven rebounds and tallied a game-best four assists.

The Pointers also received nine points and eight rebounds from Joe Ritchay and seven points and two rebounds from Trevor Hass.

UW-Stevens Point (15-0/6-0 WIAC), which is off to its best start in the 116-year history of its program, entered the contest as the top-ranked team in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com.

AJ Mueller scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds to lead UW-Oshkosh (5-9/1-5 WIAC). The Titans also acquired five points and eight rebounds from Jade Royston and five points and two steals from Alex Olson.

Poor shooting in all three departments hampered UW-Oshkosh. The Titans shot just 23.9 percent (11-46) from the field and only 35.7 percent (5-14) from the free throw line. UW-Oshkosh committed 17 turnovers while shooting 3-of-17 (17.6 percent) behind the three-point arc.

UW-Stevens Point converted 46.9 percent (23-49) of its shots from the field, but just 50 percent (6-12) of its tosses from the foul line. The Pointers shot 31.6 percent (6-19) from the three-point area. UW-Stevens Point turned the basketball over 12 times and totaled 34 rebounds to match UW-Oshkosh.

After watching UW-Oshkosh score the first five points, UW-Stevens Point counted 23 of the next 29 to take a 23-11 lead with 6:11 left in the first half. The Pointers never gave the advantage back after taking an 8-7 lead.

Led by Tillema's 13 points, UW-Stevens Point took a 30-17 lead to intermission. Mueller paced UW-Oshkosh during the opening period with seven points.

UW-Oshkosh scored the first four points of the second half, but UW-Stevens responded with 11 straight points of its own to take a 41-21 lead with 14:43 to play.

Following a UW-Oshkosh basket, UW-Stevens Point counted 12 consecutive points to take a 53-23 advantage with 9:30 left. The Pointers led by 28-plus points the rest of the way, including a 57-25 score with 5:54 remaining.

UW-Oshkosh plays its next three games in Kolf Sports Center, including Saturday's (Jan. 18) contest against UW-Stout.
