Trinson White had a game-high 19 points and eight rebounds as UW-Whitewater produced a strong defensive effort in the second half to defeat UW-Oshkosh, 66-60, in a men's basketball contest held Wednesday (Jan. 20) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh held a 55-47 lead with 9:23 remaining, but UW-Whitewater limited the Titans to one field goal the rest of the way and closed the game with a 19-5 scoring run that featured seven points from White and six on two 3-pointers by Haki Stampley.

UW-Whitewater tied the score at 58 on a long-range jumper by Stampley and took its first lead since the 14:51 mark of the first half on a pair of free throws by White. Two free throws by Charlie Noone cut UW-Oshkosh's deficit to 62-60 with 49 seconds to play, but Stampley drilled another 3-pointer on the ensuing possession to extend the Warhawk advantage to 65-60 with 25 ticks left.

The Titans missed a 3-pointer and a layup on their final two possessions, and UW-Whitewater's Cole Van Schyndel capped the scoring by splitting two free throws with four seconds remaining.

White made 7 of 11 shots from the field and converted all five of his free throws, while Stampley tallied 14 points and Van Schyndel 13 points and seven rebounds.

UW-Whitewater (12-4, 3-2 WIAC) ended the game shooting 50 percent (23-46) from the floor and 76.2 percent (16-21) from the foul line. The Warhawks went 4-for-6 (66.7 percent) from 3-point range during the second half after missing all five of their attempts from beyond the arc during the first period.

UW-Oshkosh (10-6, 3-2 WIAC) shot 44.2 percent (23-52) from the field and held a 13-7 advantage in assists. The Titans made 9 of 15 shots (60 percent) from behind the 3-point line in the first half but missed all nine of their long-range attempts in the second stanza.

Both teams hit seven of their first 10 field goals during the first eight minutes of play. Five of UW-Oshkosh's first six baskets were 3-pointers as the Titans built a 17-14 lead on a deep jumper by Noone less than seven minutes into the game.

UW-Oshkosh maintained an advantage over the next 31 minutes, including its largest cushion of 12 points at 30-18 with five minutes left in the first period.

UW-Whitewater scored nine unanswered points to pull within 30-27 on a layup by White with 2:36 to go in the first half, but UW-Oshkosh tallied eight of the last nine points of the period and increased its lead to 38-28 at intermission on a 3-pointer by Sean Dwyer at the buzzer.

Noone led the Titans with 17 points and five rebounds. He made 6 of 10 shots from the floor, including 3 of 6 from 3-point range.

Dwyer contributed 12 points, all on first-half 3-pointers, while Alex Olson had 10 points and a game-high four assists. Max Schebel chipped in nine points off the UW-Oshkosh bench.

The Titans host UW-Stout on Saturday (Jan. 23) in Kolf Sports Center.
