Spartans Narrowly Defeat Titans

Delaney Karl had the Titans' lone shot on goal against the Spartans.

The University of Dubuque (Iowa) scored once in each half as it defeated UW-Oshkosh, 2-1, in a women's soccer match held Friday (Sept. 14) in Dubuque, Iowa.

The Spartans, who have gone 9-1-1 in their last 11 home matches, took a 1-0 lead over UW-Oshkosh on Lexus Rose's goal 13 minutes (12:11) into the contest. Rose's goal, which followed a pass from McKenna Young, was her team-leading fourth of the season.

The University of Dubuque (4-1) doubled their advantage over the Titans (3-2-1) on Carissa Brown's goal during the game's 70th minute (69:40). Brown's first goal of the year was created by passes from Amanda Chlebek and Lauren Cangelosi.

UW-Oshkosh trailed by two scores until it benefited from an own goal during the 87th minute of play.

The University of Dubuque attempted 19 shots, including three that were saved by UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Madelyn Runyan in the first half and four in the second. The Spartans also had a shot by Cangelosi bounce off the crossbar during the contest's 87th minute. 

Cangelosi led the Spartans with four shots while Chlebek and Rose tallied three each.

UW-Oshkosh, which won its previous four meetings with the University of Dubuque, was held to eight shots, all in the second half.

Delaney Karl paced the Titans with three shots, including the team's only attempt that was saved by Spartan goalkeeper Victoria Roether. UW-Oshkosh also had a shot by Emily Burg deflect off the crossbar during the game's 68th minute.

The University of Dubuque finished the match with six corner kicks and UW-Oshkosh four.

UW-Oshkosh remains on the road to play nationally ranked University of Chicago (Ill.) on Sunday. The Maroons rank third in the NCAA Division III by the United Soccer Coaches with their 4-0-1 record.
