Nationally Ranked Warhawks Upend Titans

Kalli Mau had a double-double for UW-Oshkosh with 21 assists and 10 digs, but the nationally ranked UW-Whitewater women's volleyball team claimed the final three sets en route to a 3-1 win over the Titans during the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener for both teams Tuesday (Sept. 13) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Whitewater (8-2, 1-0 WIAC), ranked 15th in the NCAA Division III by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, defeated UW-Oshkosh (8-3, 0-1 WIAC) in set scores of 24-26, 25-19, 25-17, 25-16.

The Warhawks concluded the match with advantages of 55-42 in kills, .266 to .092 in hitting percentage, 77-64 in digs, 10-3 in blocks and 8-5 in service aces. UW-Oshkosh went into the night ranked fifth in the country in total blocks and seventh in total digs. UW-Whitewater entered the contest 11th nationally in total service aces.

Carissa Sundholm led UW-Oshkosh with 10 kills while Riley Kindt added nine terminations, and Robyn Kirsch and Hannah Moe both chipped in eight.

Mau, who notched a pair of service aces, recorded her fourth double-double this season and 13th career. Abby Fregien paced the Titans backrow defense with 21 digs. Fregien listed seventh in the division in digs heading in Tuesday while Kindt, who had one block against the Warhawks, was eighth in total blocks.

UW-Whitewater's Jenna Weinfurt led all players with 16 kills to go along with 14 digs and five blocks.

Erin McNeil contributed 14 kills on 27 swings for the Warhawks, who also received 30 assists and 13 digs from KellyAnn Sotiros and 21 digs from Morgan Jensen.

UW-Oshkosh overcame an 8-3 deficit in the opening set, scoring eight consecutive points for a 14-10 advantage. The eight-point run featured kills by Moe and Kindt, and a Mau service ace. The Warhawks responded with a 6-1 run to reclaim a 24-23 edge. However, the Titans scored the final three points to claim the frame following back-to-back terminations from Kirsch and Kindt, and a Warhawks attack error.

The Warhawks went on to hit .417 in the second set, .393 during the third frame and .273 in the fourth to secure the league victory.

UW-Oshkosh begins a stretch of 11 straight matches away from home when it plays Muskingum (Ohio) and DePauw (Ind.) universities Friday (Sept. 16) at the Ohio Northern University Invitational.
