Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.–Abby Fregien and Riley Kindt were named to the All-Tournament Team as the UW-Oshkosh women's volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday (Sept. 3) to finish with a 3-1 record at the season opening Captains Classic in Newport News, Va.

UW-Oshkosh defeated tournament host Christopher Newport University, 3-1, in set scores of 25-15, 25-21, 23-25, 27-25 before falling to nationally ranked Juniata College (Pa.), 3-0, in scores of 25-16, 25-13, 25-20. Juniata (3-0), which reached the semifinals of NCAA Division III Championship last season, is ranked fourth in the country by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

The Titans and Christopher Newport met for the first time since UW-Oshkosh also downed the Captains by a 3-1 score in 2010. Christopher Newport has made 14 consecutive trips to the national tournament.

Fregien had 47 digs Saturday, including a career-best 28 versus Christopher Newport, while Kindt paced the Titans in kills both matches, pounding down 14 terminations against Christopher Newport and eight against Juniata to go along with eight total blocks on the day.

UW-Oshkosh held Christopher Newport to a -.011 hitting percentage as the Captains committed 45 attack errors, 11 service errors, six receiving errors and two blocking errors. The Titans trailed during just seven points during the first two sets and overcame deficits of 19-16 and 22-21 in the fourth frame, clinching the victory on a Kindt solo block and a Carissa Sundholm kill on the final two points.

Juniata collected 41 kills on .220 hitting to secure its win over UW-Oshkosh during the de facto championship match of the Captains Classic.

UW-Oshkosh returns home to host a quadrangular with St. Norbert College, Lakeland University and UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday (Sept. 7) in Kolf Sports Center.
