Titans Eclipse 100 Points For First Time Since 2020 In Win Over Owls

Brandon Beck went 6-of-8 from the field, 4-of-4 from three and 2-of-2 from the line for 18 points

OSHKOSH, Wis.- UW-Oshkosh men's basketball opened the 2024 UW-Oshkosh BSN Winter Classic with a statement. The Titans, receiving votes in the most recent D3hoops.com national poll, turned in their second top-25 win of the season by defeating No. 12 Keene State College (N.H.), 105-76, at the Oshkosh Arena on Sunday (Dec. 29).

The Titans (8-2) totaled 54.1 percent (33-of-61) from the field, 53.8 percent (7-of-13) from three and 80 percent (32-of-40) from the line during the contest, outrebounded the Owls (6-2, 2-0 LEC) 46 to 32 and led for over 39 minutes of the regulation game.
 
Oshkosh also paced Keene State 13 to six in assists, six to three in blocks, 50 to 28 in points in the paint, and 21 to 14 in second chance points.
 
Michael Metcalf-Grassman (So. • Shawano/Waukesha) was the top scorer of the game, recording 27 points on 8-of-15 from the field and 11-of-14 from the line. Four more Titans scored double-digit points. Brandon Beck (Fr. • Rockton, Ill.) registered 18, Joey LaChapell (Fr. • Appleton) 17, Carter Thomas (Jr. • Neenah) 16, and Jonah Rindfleisch (Sr. • Milwaukee) 14. Rindfleisch pulled down eight rebounds (one offensive) and notched three blocks while Matt Imig (Jr. • Ashwaubenon) recorded six assists.
 
Thomas and LaChapell made a pair of layups at the start of the game to put UW-Oshkosh up early. The Titans retained their lead until five straight Owl points tied the score at 12-12 with 13:17 remaining in the first half.
 
The teams stayed close in score for the next two minutes and Keene State secured its only edge of the game on a three at 11:19, making the score 17-16. Beck responded with a 3-pointer of his own and seven more points before LaChapell increased Oshkosh's lead to 28-17 just before the 8-minute mark.
 
The Titans led by as much as 15 points before halftime and went to the locker room up 49-38 after the Owls tallied a layup and a free throw for the last three points of the period.
 
Max Tutas (So. • Sheboygan) made a layup in UW-Oshkosh's first possession of the second half and Rindfleisch knocked down a jumper from the paint to create a 13-point deficit. The Titans later scored recorded seven successful free throw attempts in a minute and four seconds, leading 65-49 with 13:51 to go.
 
 The teams traded baskets past the halfway mark of the period and Oshkosh's lead hovered around 16 points before it reached a 20-point edge on a 5-0 spurt. The Titans moved further ahead on a 7-point run between 4:48 and 4:10. Keene State made a three with four minutes remaining before being held to just a sub 1-minute layup against UW-Oshkosh's 10 points the rest of the way.
 
The Titans play Hamline University (Minn.) (6-5, 2-1 MIAC) at 5 p.m. on Saturday (Dec. 30) in their second game of the BSN Winter Classic. The Pipers fell, 70-63 to UW-La Crosse (8-2) on Saturday. The Titans and Pipers have met once since the 1985-86 season. Oshkosh won, 81-72 in Orlando, Fla., on Dec. 19, 2007.
