Titans Conclude Nonconference Play With Dominant Win Over Sabres

Mahra Wieman scored 10 points on 4-of-5 from the field, 1-of-1 from three and 1-of-3 from the line

OSHKOSH, Wis.- UW-Oshkosh women's basketball won its second game of the BSN Winter Classic at the Oshkosh Arena on Monday (Dec. 30), beating Marian University by a 70-28 score.
 
The Titans (11-0) are now 9-2 against the Sabres (3-7, 1-1 NACC) dating back to 1990 and have won the last seven matchups.
 
In a largely bench-played game, Oshkosh had 53 points off the bench, scored 30 points in the paint, and added 18 off the Sabres' 21 turnovers.
 
The Titans held the Sabres single digits in three of the four quarters while shooting 44.1 percent (26-of-59) from the field and 78.6 percent (11-of-14) from the line. They also added seven 3-pointers for 21 additional points. Oshkosh pulled down 50 rebounds to Marian's 19 and recorded 16 assists. Six Titans combined for nine blocks and six combined for seven steals.
 
Kayce Vaile (Fifth • Greendale) scored a team-high 11 points and registered five rebounds while leading Oshkosh with a trio of blocks. She went 4-of-7 from the field and 3-of-4 from the line. Mahra Wieman (Jr. • Sparta) was Oshkosh's second-highest scorer with 10 points, adding three rebounds and a pair of blocks.
 
Both Sammi Beyer (So. • Appleton) and Hope Barington (So. • Sobieski) recorded three assists and Sarah Hardwick (Jr. • Green Bay) stole the ball twice.
 
Marian went up 4-0 early on a layup and two free throws. UW-Oshkosh responded with 11 straight points over the following five minutes. Vaile scored five of the points, Mallory Lindsey (Jr. • Mineral Point) and Beyer scored three each.
 
The Sabres cut the lead to a point before back-to-back 3-pointers from Barington and Mallory Hoitink (So. • Hartford) and Beyer tallied a pair of free throws to make the score 19-10 with 24 seconds to go in the period. Marian then hit a jumper with three seconds remaining.
 
The first eight points of the second quarter were tallied by UW-Oshkosh and it increased its edge to 22 points with another eight more after Marian scored on a free throw. The Sabres outscored the Titans, 6-5, in the last 1:52 with two threes against Oshkosh's three and jump shot.
 
Marian was held to one point in the third quarter and UW-Oshkosh scored 14 points 9-0 and 5-0 points. The Titans were up, 54-20, headed into the final period.
 
Five consecutive Sabre points decreased the deficit to 33 points with four minutes to play, followed by six points for Oshkosh. Olivia Argall (Jr. • Dodgeville), Allison Forney, (Fifth • Batavia, Ill.) and Mayah Holzhueter (Jr. • Cambridge) all scored in the run. Over the final 3:25 of the game, UW-Oshkosh went 5-0 with layups from Forney and Holzhueter and a Forney free throw.
 
Poole and Vaile were both named to the All-Classic team at the conclusion of the game.
 
The Titans will begin the conference portion of their schedule against UW-Stout (8-2) at Kolf Sports Center on Saturday (Jan. 4) at 3 p.m. UW-Oshkosh is 62-26 all-time against the Blue Devils and 6-4 in the last 10 contests.
