OSHKOSH, Wis.- The UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team took down the Calvin University (Mich.) Knights for the second time this season by a score of 73-69.
The Titans (7-1) were hot from beyond the arc shooting 34 percent (10-of-29) to the Knights' (1-6) 26 percent (6-of-23). Oshkosh also converted efficiently at the charity stripe, sinking 19 of its 24 free throws. The Oshkosh bench also came up big in this contest by scoring 34 of the Titans' 73 points.
Brandon Beck (Fr. • Rockton, Ill.) led the way for the Titans off the bench. He scored 21 points by making eight of his 14 shots, with four being from 3-point land and tallying four rebounds. He did all that in only 23 minutes on the hardwood. Beck was closely followed by
Michael Metcalf-Grassman (So. • Shawano/Waukesha) who added 15 points, two rebounds, and two steals.
Calvin opened up the game hot, going 4-of-4 from the field and led the Titans 9-2 with
three minutes gone in the half. The Knights then extended their lead with a 4-3 run to go up 13-5 with 14 remaining in the half. Over the next four minutes, Oshkosh surged by producing a 13-5 streak to tie the contest at 18 a piece with just over nine minutes to go. The Titans then pulled ahead for their first lead of the matchup with an 11-3 run, with eight of those 11 points coming from Beck, putting the Titans ahead 29-21 with 5:57 left in the half. Calvin ended the half with a 9-4 cut the deficit down to 32-30.
Metcalf-Grassman opened the second half by leading a 7-4 Titans run, where he scored all seven of Oshkosh's points, and putting the Titans up 39-34. Calvin went on a 7-6 run to get within four points of the Titans, 45-41, with 12 minutes to go in the contest. The Knights produced a 5-4 run to put them within three (49-46) with just under 11 minutes left. Oshkosh then extended their lead with a 9-3 run to put them further ahead 59-49. The Knights had a 10-5 run putting the score at 64-59 with under 3 minutes to go. Calvin closed out the contest with a 10-9 run but it was not enough to overcome the Titans.
UW-Oshkosh is now slated to battle the St. Norbert College Green Knights (4-1) in De Pere, at the Mulva Family Fitness & Sports Center on Saturday, December 21.
