Pioneers Defeat Titans In Three Sets

The Titans lost to UW-Platteville for the first time since 2014 on Wednesday

PLATTEVILLE, Wis.- The UW-Oshkosh women's volleyball team fell to UW-Platteville, 3-0, on Wednesday (Sept. 25) in Platteville.

The Pioneers (11-2, 1-1 WIAC), receiving votes in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association poll, won over the second-ranked Titans (13-3, 1-1 WIAC) in set scores of 25-14, 25-22 and 25-18, ending UW-Oshkosh's nine-match winning streak that dated back to Nov. 4, 2014.

Oshkosh totaled 31 kills in the match, with 30 assists, six aces, two total blocks and 41 digs. Platteville held advantages with 43 kills, 37 assists, seven aces, 10 total blocks and 48 digs.

Sami Perlberg (So. • Chippewa Falls) had 10 kills with a .348 hitting percentage (two errors on 23 total attacks) while Kalli Mau (Fifth • Kimberly) and Izzy Coon (Jr. • Fond du Lac) both passed 10 assists at 14 and 13 respectively. Abby Fregien (Sr. • Waukesha) recorded 12 digs and two points from the service line and Lauren Grier (So. • Fond du Lac) notched two blocks.

The Pioneers jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the first set on three kills and an ace and refused to relinquish the lead. They went on two runs of four points and reached match point on a 5-0 spurt that included three kills from Emma Carlson. Olivia Breunig (Sr. • Sauk Prairie) extended the set with a kill to bring the Titans within 10 points, but Carlson ended the set with a kill in the following rally.

UW-Oshkosh didn't let an early Platteville edge forced it out of the second set, keeping the score close and taking the lead on a 4-point run to make the score 12-11. The Titans expanded the deficit to as much as four points and led 22-19 after Grier registered a kill late. The Pioneers then answered with six-straight points and took a 2-0 set lead.

Early runs of four and three points handed the Pioneers the lead early in set three until the Titans strung together short runs to come back within a point as late as 17-16. Five points were scored in a row by UW-Platteville, pushing its lead to eight points; large enough to allow Oshkosh to score twice more against its own three.

The Titans will not play on a Saturday for the first time this season, returning to the court on Tuesday (Oct. 1) for a home triangular against Edgewood College and Carthage College.
