Titans Rout Red Hawks

Michael Metcalf-Grassman scored a season-high 17 points on 7 of 9 shooting from the field

OSHKOSH, Wis.-UW-Oshkosh men's basketball established a new season scoring high during a 100-74 nonconference home victory over Ripon College on Wednesday (Dec. 17) in Kolf Sports Center.

Oshkosh (7-2), which is receiving votes in the latest D3hoops.com poll, eclipsed its previous season-best of 94 points by shooting 52.4 percent (33-63) from the floor, 42.4 percent (14-33) from 3-point range and 62.5 percent (20-32) at the free throw line on the way to the wire-to-wire win.

Brandon Beck (Rockton, Ill./Hillcrest Prep (Ariz.)) paced four Oshkosh double-digit scorers with 21 points while Michael Metcalf-Grassman (Shawano/Waukesha/Shawano Community) added a season-best 17 points, Aiden Hawkinson (Waupun/Waupun) a season-high 15 points and Joey LaChapell (Appleton/Appleton East) 12. Hawkinson went 6-for-7 from the field, Metcalf-Grassman 7-for-9 and LaChapell 3-for-3 as the trio combined to go 7 of 8 from 3-point range.

Beck, who drilled four 3-pointers on nine attempts, grabbed a team-leading six rebounds. LaChapell paced the squad with three assists.

Oshkosh held advantages of 36-33 in rebounds, 16-7 in assists, 11-20 in turnovers and 14-5 in steals en route to winning its third straight game against Ripon (2-9) and fourth in the past five yearly meetings. The Titans, who have now made at least 11 3-pointers on nine occasions this season, went into the night ranked third in the NCAA Division III with 37 3-point attempts per game and ninth nationally with 11.5 made 3s per contest.

The Titans tallied at least 100 points for the third time in the past seven seasons, including a 105-76 win over Keene State College (N.H.) last year and a 105-95 triumph against UW-Stevens Point in 2019-20.

The first four Oshkosh possessions resulted in made field goals as LaChapell drained a pair of 3-pointers, Metcalf-Grassman added a 3 of his own and a Logan Rindfleisch (Milwaukee/Wisconsin Lutheran) layup gave the Titans a 11-2 lead less than three minutes into the game.

A Matt Imig (Ashwaubenon/Ashwaubenon) 3-pointer extended the cushion to 16-4 at the 15:29 mark of the opening period, and Oshkosh led by double digits the rest of the way.

After building a 57-33 advantage at halftime, the Titans owned their largest lead of the game at 91-54 following a Hawkinson 3-pointer with just under six minutes to play.

Marshawn Robinson had a team-high 11 points for Ripon, which also received 10 points apiece from Michael Asman and Kolby Williams.

The Titans continue their stretch of three straight intrastate nonconference home games Saturday (Dec. 20), when they host St. Norbert College at 2 p.m. in Kolf Sports Center. Oshkosh, which owns a 14-11 record against St. Norbert since the 1996-97 campaign, will seek to end a two-game losing streak in the series.
