Titans Shut Out Transylvania In Sunday Twinbill

LEXINGTON, Ky.- The UW-Oshkosh baseball team faced off against two teams in Lexington, Kentucky on Sunday (March 16). The Titans fell in the first game to the University of Chicago (Ill.),11-2, before coming back for the nightcap and beating host Transylvania University (Ky.), 10-0, in eight innings.

The Titans scored their two runs against Chicago on four hits with one error. The Maroons scored their 11 runs on 14 hits with no errors. The Titans allowed the first run in the third inning, and fell behind 11-0 by the ninth. Oshkosh attempted a comeback in the bottom of the ninth, scoring two runs. Logan Schill (So. • Pewaukee) scored on a walk from Carson Stenberg (Sr. • Balsam Lake), and Chris Callas (So. • Mundelein, Ill.) scored on a fielder's choice by Mateo Gamboa (Fr. • Midlothian, Ill.).

Connor Walters (Jr. • Libertyville, Ill.) was the starting pitcher in game one, throwing five innings and striking out one while allowing four runs on seven hits and four walks. Walters moves to 2-1 on the year after suffering his first loss.

The Titans came back against Transylvania strong, as the Titans won 10-0 in eight innings. The Titans scored their ten runs on eleven hits with no errors, while Transylvania scored no runs on four hits with one error.

Josh Jansen (Jr. • DeForest) allowed only three hits in his seven innings on the mound, striking out seven. Jansen moves to 2-0 on the season.

Jack McNamara (Jr. • La Grange, Ill.) and Jake Surane (Grad. • Lincolnshire, Ill.) both recorded multi-hit games at the plate, with McNamara going 2-for-3 with a double and Surane going 2-for-5 with two RBIs.

McNamara scored the first run for Oshkosh in the first inning on a sacrifice fly from Brenden Max (Jr. • Libertyville, Ill.). Zach Taylor (Grad. • Long Grove, Ill.) added another run for the Titans, batting in Nick Shiu (Sr. • Gurnee, Ill.) on an RBI single.

McNamara had an RBI single in the second, scoring Braydon Skenandore (So. • De Pere) to put the Titans up 3-0.

In the sixth inning, Surane drove in two runs on a double, scoring Owen Housinger (Jr. • Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) and Mason Kirchberg (Sr. • DeForest).

The Titans capped off their shortened victory with a five-run eighth inning. Shiu drove in Aaron Davis (Fr. • Darien, Ill.) on a double, followed by a two-RBI single from Carter Stebane (Sr. • Brillion). Kirchberg drove in Max on a RBI single, and Stebane scored on a sacrifice fly from Housinger.

Brett Gaynor (So. • Long Grove, Ill.) pitched the final inning, striking out a pair of batters for the Titans to secure the win.

The Titans return on Monday (March 17) to play the Pioneers again.
