Titans Sweep Blugolds In Set Of Seven-Inning Games

Josh Jansen pitched the first complete game shutout of his career with six strikeouts on Saturday

EAU CLAIRE, Wis.- UW-Oshkosh baseball extended its winning streak over UW-Eau Claire to 12 games on Saturday (April 12) with seven-inning wins over the Blugolds by scores of 10-0 and 17-5 at Carson Park.

The Titans (15-8, 7-5 WIAC), receiving votes in this week's D3baseball.com and the American Baseball Coaches Association polls, tallied 27 hits on the day and committed one error against the Blugolds' (6-16, 0-12 WIAC) 11 hits and three errors.

Four Titans had multi-hit games in the series opener, led by a 2-for-3 effort by Braydon Skenandore (So. • De Pere) with two runs and three RBIs. Logan Schill (So. • Pewaukee) also registered three RBIs to go with a run on 1-of-4 from the plate.

Josh Jansen (Jr. • DeForest) pitched all seven innings of the first game, striking out six while allowing three hits and three walks in his first career complete game and first shutout. He moved to a 4-1 record this season.

Oshkosh's first runs of the first game crossed the plate in the second inning. Cater Stebane (Sr. • Brillion) drew a leadoff walk and stole second before Skenandore hit the Titan's first home run of the day to create a 2-0 edge. Schill hit their second in the fourth inning with a three-run shot to center field.

Zach Taylor (Grad. • Long Grove, Ill.) traded places with Mason Kirchberg (Sr. • DeForest) after the second baseman led off the top of the seventh with a double. Taylor scored two batters later on a Skenandore single. Jack McNamara (Jr. • LaGrange, Ill.) singled through the right side with runners on second and third, advancing to third on an error and clearing the bases for a 9-0 lead. Schill sent McNamara home for the deciding 10th run on an error.

After a leadoff single in the bottom half of the seventh, Jansen struck out two batters and forced a lineout for the win.

Five Titans had at least two hits in the nightcap including four with three hits and all nine batters scored at least one run. Schill and Taylor tallied three runs while Nick Shiu (Sr. • Gurnee, Ill.) and Stebane both had four-RBI games which ties a career-best mark for both.

Game two's starter for Oshkosh was Brett Gaynor (So. • Long Grove, Ill.). Gaynor (2-2) threw 6.1 innings and struck out seven while allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits. Aaron Huibregtse (Sr. • Oostburg) came in for the final two outs of the game and paired a hit and a walk with a strikeout.

The Titans jumped on the board fast in the second game, kicked off by a leadoff home run for Taylor in the second inning. Three more runs were added to Oshkosh's tally by the end of the frame on a Skenandore single, a Danny Connelly (So. • Mundelein, Ill.) groundout, and a Shiu double.

Taylor made the score 5-0 the following inning with another solo shot. Owen Housinger (Jr. • Brillion) scored on a Schill sacrifice fly and Shiu homered in the fourth for another pair of runs while Gaynor kept the Blugolds through three innings.

Eau Claire scored its first run of the day on a passed ball in the fourth inning.

Six runs scored on four hits in the top of the sixth inning. Connelly crossed home on a Shiu sacrifice fly, Jake Surane (Grad. • Lincolnshire, Ill.) and Schill tacked on two runs on a Kirchberg double, and Stebane cleared the basepath with a three-run home run after Taylor was intentionally walked following Kirchberg's at-bat.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Blugolds added four runs on three singles to decrease the deficit to eight runs, but four more Titans crossed the plate in the top of the seventh for the second straight seven-inning win.

Oshkosh scored on a Shiu single, a bases loaded walk for Taylor, a Stebane hit by pitch, and a Skenandore walk in the frame for a 17-5 lead headed into the bottom half of the seventh.

The Blugolds managed to put runners on second and third with two outs, but went down looking for the final out.

The Titans will play the final two games of their series with the Blugolds on Sunday (April 12) at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
