Pointers Outlast Titans In Marathon 13-Inning Nightcap

Brianna Bougie went the distance in the 12-inning nightcap, striking out four while allowing just one earned run

WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis.- On Wednesday (April 23), UW-Oshkosh softball faced off against conference rival UW-Stevens Point. The Titans lost both games, with the second going to 13 innings, their longest contest since a 5-4, 13-inning win over Worcester State University (Mass.) on March 21, 2013.

The Titans (26-6, 4-4 WIAC) lost the first game 0-6, where they had four hits and one error. The Pointers (25-7, 4-4 WIAC) had six runs on nine hits with no errors. In the second game, the Titans lost 3-4, with 11 hits and four errors. Stevens Point scored their four runs on eight hits with three errors.

Pitching for the Titans in the opener was Sydney Nemetz (Sr. • Marinette), who suffered the loss to move to 11-3 on the year. She gave up five runs on seven hits and two walks. Skyler Calmes (Jr. • Kaukauna) pitched the final two innings, striking out two while giving up one run on two hits.

Stevens Point took the lead in the first inning of game one on an RBI single. The Pointers added two more runs in the third and the fourth innings and scored their final run in the sixth to go up 6-0.

The Titans had two extra base hits, including a triple from Morgan Miller (Jr. • Schaumberg, Ill.), and a double from Morgan Rau (Fifth. • Downers Grove, Ill.). Miller led off the seventh inning with her triple, but was stranded when the next three batters went down in order.

Brianna Bougie (So. • Oshkosh) pitched the entire second game for the Titans, throwing 169 pitches. Bougie (6-1) struck out four while giving up eight hits and one walk for just one earned run.

At the plate, Abby Garceau (Sr. • Mishicot), Martineck, and Cali Divito (Sr. • Inverness, Ill.) each recorded a 2-hit game. Martineck both of Martineck's hits were doubles and she drew two walks with an RBI.

Despite putting up a valiant effort in the marathon nightcap, the Titans lost the second game in the sixth extra inning.

The Titans fell behind in the fourth, as Stevens Point put up the first three runs of the game on two singles and an advance during a rundown.

The Titans began their comeback in the fifth inning, starting with an RBI single by Olivia Ullman (Fr. • Denmark), which scored Olivia Baugnet (Fr. • De Pere). Miller scored later in the inning on a ground out by Rau.

In the sixth inning, Sarah Hammerton (So. • Appleton) scored on an RBI double from Amanda Martineck (So. • Frankfort, Ill.) to tie the game at three runs apiece.

While Bougie sat the Pointers down in order in the first extra frame and escaped the situations with runners on first and second in the ninth and 11th innings and a first-and-third jam in the 12th, Stevens Point walked off the series win with a home run in the 13th.

The Titans (26-6, 4-4 WIAC) return tomorrow (April 24) as they travel to Plymouth, Wisconsin to take on Lakeland University.
