Titans Complete First Sweep Of Pointers Since 2018

Zach Taylor had a 7-for-9 day at the plate with three doubles, three runs, and two RBIs

STEVENS POINT, Wis.- UW-Oshkosh baseball finished its four-game regular season sweep of UW-Stevens Point at Zimmerman Field on Sunday (April 27) with a 5-3 win and a seven-inning 14-4 victory.

The sweep was Oshkosh's first over the Pointers since 2018 and the first in Stevens Point since 1995.

The Titans (25-11, 16-8 WIAC) recorded 32 hits between Sunday's contests, including 19 in the second game, the most since notching 23 in a 15-4 win at UW-La Crosse on May 5, 2018.

Josh Jansen (DeForest/DeForest) (Jr. • DeForest) threw seven scoreless innings in the first game of the day, striking out five batters while allowing seven hits and four walks. He struck out two batters in the fourth and seventh innings. Hoyt Keller (Wautoma/Wautoma) (Jr. • Wautoma) faced two batters in the eighth inning, allowing two runs on two hits before being pulled in favor of Ryan Richter (Waukesha/Waukesha West) (So. • Waukesha). Richter allowed a run on three hits and a walk in 0.1 innings before Nick Rector (Sewell, N.J./Clearview Regional) (Sr. • Sewell, N.J.) earned his second save of the season in 1.2 innings of work with two strikeouts against no runs and no hits.

All nine starting batters had at least one hit in the game and four had two hits. Zach Taylor (Long Grove, Ill./Stevenson) (Grad. • Long Grove, Ill.) and Mason Kirchberg (DeForest/DeForest) (Sr. • DeForest) both had a double in the game.

Nick Shiu (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) (Sr. • Gurnee, Ill.) got Oshkosh on the board in the second inning, scoring Jack McNamara (La Grange, Ill./Lyons) (Jr. • La Grange, Ill.) who reached with a single, by singling to right center field.

UW-Oshkosh went up 3-0 in the fifth inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Carter Stebane (Brillion/Brillion) (Sr. • Brillion) and an infield single to third base by Owen Housinger (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Stevenson) (Jr. • Hawthorn Woods, Ill.).

Kirchberg led off the sixth inning with a double to right field and moved to second when McNamara laid down a sacrifice bunt. Logan Schill (Pewaukee/Pewaukee) (So. • Pewaukee) sent Kirchberg home on a left-field single and later scored when Jake Surane (Lincolnshire, Ill./Stevenson) (Grad. • Lincolnshire, Ill.) reached on an error.

The Pointers attempted a comeback in the eighth inning when they scored runs on a trio of RBI singles, but Richter struck out his first batter and induced a play at second base to halt the rally.

Brett Gaynor (Long Grove, Ill./Stevenson) (So. • Long Grove, Ill.) threw a seven-inning complete game in the series finale, fanning four batters while allowing four runs, three earned on five hits, two walks, and a hit batter.

Taylor went a perfect 5-for-5 in Sunday's second game with two doubles, two runs, and two RBIs. Shiu also went 100-percent at the plate with a 4-for-4 game, three runs and two RBIs while Kirchberg hit 2-for-2 with a pair of walks, a home run, two runs, and an RBI. In all five Titans scored at least two runs and four recorded at least two RBIs led by Stebane's three.

The teams traded runs on RBI singles in the first inning before Oshkosh took the edge in the second. McNamara reached on a fielder's choice and reached home when Shiu singled to center field.

The Titans extended their lead to 5-1 by the end of the fourth inning, tallying runs on a pair of RBI singles and a pair of fielder's choices. They then added seven runs in the fifth inning to take a commanding 12-1 lead. Schill and Shiu hit RBI singles, Surane notched a two-RBI double followed by an RBI double for Taylor, and Stebane homered to left center, also scoring Taylor.

Stevens Point got on the board again in the bottom of the fifth with an additional pair of runs, but Oshkosh responded with two more in the top of the sixth. Kirchberg hit a leadoff home run and Taylor singled through the right side to score Schill for a score of 14-3.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Pointers scored one more run on a double before the Titans took the shortened win.

The Titans finish their regular season in Menomonie on Friday and Saturday (May 2-3), facing UW-Stout (14-22, 12-12 WIAC) for a pair of doubleheaders slated to begin at 1 p.m. and noon respectively.
