Titans Drop Series To Eagles

OSHKOSH, Wis.- The UW-Oshkosh baseball team dropped its Sunday (April 5) doubleheader at home to UW-La Crosse by scores of 10-5 and 13-2.
 
The Titans, ranked 24th in this week's D3baseball.com poll and 27th by the American Baseball Coaches Association, recorded 17 hits on the day to the No. 10/10 Eagles' 26. La Crosse took the series sweep on Sunday but committed four errors to Oshkosh's one.
 
Josh Jansen (Jr. • DeForest) was the Titans' starter in the first game of the doubleheader. He pitched 5.2 innings and struck out six while allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits and six walks. He was assigned the loss and moved to 3-1 on the season.
 
Titan relief pitchers for the game were Grant Schultz (So. • Menomonee Falls), Benje Hencke (So. • De Pere), and Vann Olson (Fr. • Maple Grove, Minn.). Schultz threw 0.1 innings and allowed two runs on three hits and a walk. Hencke tossed 2.1 innings and allowed two runs on a hit and Olson pitched the last 0.2 innings, holding the Eagles scoreless while allowing a hit.
 
Zach Taylor (Grad. • Long Grove, Ill.) and Carter Stebane (Sr. • Brillion) both went 2-for-4 in game one. Taylor had a double and Stebane had a solo home run while Jake Surane (Grad. • Lincolnshire, Ill.) had two RBIs on a run on 2-for-5 at the plate.
 
The Eagles scored the first runs of the day on a two-RBI single in the second inning. They added another run in the fourth, two in the fifth, and three on a three-RBI home run in the sixth, leading 8-0 by the end of the inning.
 
UW-Oshkosh scored its first run when Stebane hit a leadoff home run to left field in the seventh inning.
 
UW-La Crosse added two runs in the top of the ninth, leading 10-1 headed into the final half frame.
 
Brenden Max (Jr. • Libertyville, Ill.) walked and moved to second when Owen Housinger (Jr. • Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) reached on an error. Jack McNamara (Jr. • LaGrange, Ill.) loaded the bases on another walk and Surane sent two runs home on a single to left field. Another pair of runs crossed the plate a batter later when Nick Shiu (Sr. • Gurnee, Ill.) cleared the bases on a single down the left field line and advanced to second on an error. He reached third on a balk before the Eagles got the third out and secured the series win.
 
Brett Gaynor (So. • Long Grove, Ill.) started on the mound in the fourth game of the series, pitching 4.1 innings and allowed seven runs on nine hits on three walks. He struck out one batter and moved to 1-2 on the season with the loss.
 
Cooper Kamlay (Fr. • Franklin) and Olson gave up a combined six runs (five earned) over 0.2 innings as the first two relievers. Nick Rector (Sr. • Sewell, N.J.) came in during the sixth inning and recorded all three outs, striking out two while allowing two hits and a walk. Ryan Richter (Fr. • Waukesha) tossed the seventh inning, collecting a strikeout against a hit.
 
Surane went 3-for-4, stole a base and scored a run as one of three Titans with a double. Taylor and Stebane collected Oshkosh's other doubles. Shiu registered two RBIs and hit 2-for-4 in the game.
 
UW-La Crosse scored on a single and a two-run home run in the second inning, leading 3-0 before Shiu cut the deficit to a run with a two-RBI single up the middle of the infield in the bottom of the third.
 
The Eagles scored the remaining 10 runs of the series between the fourth and sixth innings including a six-run sixth inning to secure the seven-inning win.
 
The Titans hit the road on Wednesday (April 9) to face No. 1/1 UW-Whitewater (17-0, 8-0 WIAC) at the Warhawks' Prucha Field at Jim Miller Stadium.
