MENOMONIE, Wis.- Beginning the WIAC portion of its schedule in Menomonie on Wednesday (Sept. 17), UW-Oshkosh women's volleyball swept UW-Stout in straight sets – 25-23, 25-18, 25-13.
No. 3 nationally ranked UW-Oshkosh (12-1, 1-0 WIAC) tallied 48.0 points in the match and led in each statistical category – 34 to 24 in kills, seven to six in service aces, seven to six in total blocks, 31 to 22 in assists, and 38 to 32 in digs. The Titans hit .224 on 98 attacks with 12 errors, holding the Blue Devils (6-3, 0-1 WIAC) to a .022 hitting percentage.
Grace Juergens (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Community) paced UW-Oshkosh's offense with eight kills, two service aces, and two assists for 10.0 points, adding 11 digs.
Samantha Perlberg (Chippewa Falls/Chippewa Falls) also registered eight kills while digging a team-best 12 attacks.
Izzy Coon (Fond du Lac/St. Mary's Springs Academy) and
Jaclyn Dutkiewicz (Franklin/Franklin) both had 13 assists in the 3-set match.
Riley Borrowman (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) blocked 3.0 shots with one solo and joined Juergens with a pair of service aces.
UW-Oshkosh opened the match with the first three points, scoring on a service error, Juergens' first service ace, and a bad set. The Blue Devils scored four straight points to take a 7-6 lead, their only lead of the set, retaining it until the Titans notched six consecutive points for a 13-9 edge. Stout tied the score at 13-13, 21-21 and 22-22, however Borrowman and
Hannah Moe (Oconto/Oconto) combined for three kills to win the set.
The Titans scored the first two points of the second set and separated from the Blue Devils with a 6-point run to take a 15-7 lead. Stout later cut the deficit to five points but didn't get any closer and Juergens put Oshkosh up by two sets with her seventh kill.
With two points to open the third set, the Blue Devils claimed their final lead of the night before the Titans responded with a 7-1 run that included two kills, two aces, and a block. Stout cut the deficit to 11-9 with three straight points before
Maren Motz (Hartland/Arrowhead Union) recorded a kill,
Malia Winchel (Oak Creek/Oak Creek) served an ace, and Juergens hit another kill. Following two Blue Devil points, UW-Oshkosh scored a 7-0 spurt to go up 21-11. Down the stretch, three of the Titans' four points came on kills while the fourth was tallied on a service ace.
The Titans will host a multi-team event at Kolf Sports Center for the third straight weekend on Saturday (Sept. 20), as they welcome St. Catherine University (Minn.) (4-7) and the University of Northwestern (Minn.) (4-5) to Oshkosh.
