Blue Devils Upset Titans In Final Seconds

OSHKOSH, Wis.- Domanyck Schwarzenberger made a pair of free throws with 5.3 seconds remaining to lift UW-Stout to a 78-77 upset road win over nationally ranked UW-Oshkosh men's basketball Saturday (Jan. 24) in Kolf Sports Center.

Stout (7-11, 3-4 WIAC) trailed, 77-73, with under a minute to play. Collin Vick's layup pulled the Blue Devils within 77-75 with 46 ticks remaining. On the ensuing Oshkosh possession, Vick collected the rebound on an Oshkosh missed a 3-pointer and fired downcourt to a racing Nolan Stauffacher, who was fouled at the rim by Jonah Rindfleisch (Milwaukee/Wisconsin Lutheran) with 17.8 seconds left.

After a video review, Rindfleisch's foul was upgraded to a Flagrant-1, providing Stout with two free throws and possession. Schwarzenberger split the awarded free throws to cut the Blue Devils deficit to 77-76.

Following the final Stout timeout, Schwarzenberger drove into the lane and was awarded free throws after crashing into a Titan and falling to the floor with 5.3 seconds to play.
The Titans' potential game-winning 3-point attempt from 35 feet caromed off the front of the rim as time expired.

Oshkosh (14-4, 5-2 WIAC), ranked 16th in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, remained tied for first in the league standings despite suffering its first home loss (8-1) this season.
AJ Uttech led all players with 21 points off the bench for Stout, which also received 18 points from Schwarzenberger and 15 from Vick. Vick added a game-high 12 rebounds and six assists.

Brandon Beck (Rockton, Ill./Hillcrest Prep (Ariz.)) paced three Oshkosh double-digit scorers with 16 points while Joey LaChapell (Appleton/Appleton East) and Michael Metcalf-Grassman (Shawano/Waukesha/Shawano Community) had 11 apiece. Titan teams leaders also included Vitorio Dante (Castle Rock, Colo./Castle View) with eight rebounds and Matt Imig (Ashwaubenon/Ashwaubenon) with five assists.

LaChapell, the active NCAA leader in career free throw percentage at .939 entering the night, made all eight of his attempts at the charity stripe to run his consecutive made free throw streak to 33.

Stout shot 49.1 percent (28-57) from the field, 31.6 percent (6-19) from 3-point range and 61.5 percent (16-26) at the free throw line. The Blue Devils had a 41-29 rebounding advantage.

The Titans went 24-for-57 (42.1 percent) from the floor, 10-for-33 from beyond the 3-point arc and 19-for-24 (79.2 percent) at the foul line. Oshkosh owned edges of 14-9 in assists, 10-14 in turnovers and 7-3 in steals. Both teams had one block.

Oshkosh, which has won 16 of its last 21 meetings with Stout, scored the first eight points of the game and held a 39-27 lead at halftime after limiting the Blue Devils to 38.5 percent (10-26) shooting from the field.

The Blue Devils, who trailed by as many as 16 during the opening period, forged a tie at 43 with 14 minutes to play and claimed their first lead of the contest at 44-43 on a Schwarzenberger free throw at the 13:33 mark.

Wesley Mboga's 3-pointer provided Stout with its largest lead of eight points at 59-51, capping a string of eight unanswered Blue Devil points during a span of more than three minutes.

The lead changed sides five times in the second half, including when Oskar Kangas (Iron Mountain, Mich./Iron Mountain) scored in the lane to put the Titans back in front, 65-64, with just under six minutes left. Oshkosh later reclaimed the lead at 75-73 at the 1:16 mark following a pair of LaChapell free throws and a Metcalf-Grassman layup on consecutive trips down the court. Two Rindfleisch free throws then extended the Oshkosh cushion to 77-73 with under a minute to go.

The Titans remain at home to host UW-Whitewater at 7 p.m. Wednesday (Jan. 28). Oshkosh defeated the Warhawks, 90-78, during the WIAC opener on January 3 in Whitewater.
