PLYMOUTH, Wis.- UW-Oshkosh built up an early 12-2 lead against Lakeland University on Thursday night (Jan. 29) before the Muskies rattled off wins in five of the next seven weight classes to secure a 26-18 comeback win.
The match started at 133 pounds and
Ryan Hanson (McHenry, Ill./McHenry Community) got the Titans (2-9, 0-5 WIAC) off to a great start by pinning Rigoberto Tellez in 58 seconds.
After
Logan Harel (Cadott/Cadott) dropped a 7-3 decision to Jacob Hillshafer at 141 pounds,
Jacob Ward (Green Bay/Bay Port) earned another win by fall for Oshkosh in the 149-pound bout, taking Carson Smith to the mat at 1:58. Lakeland was penalized a point during the Ward-Smith match for unsportsmanlike conduct.
The Muskies (7-3) won each match between 157 and 197 with two falls, a technical fall, a major decision and a decision. They tied the score as Evan Haferkorn pinned
Logan Andrews (Wauconda, Ill./Wauconda) at 4:40 in the 165-pound match and reached 26 points at 197 pounds with a 1:10 pin over
Desmond Walker (Oshkosh/Winneconne).
Roman Martell (Oshkosh/Oshkosh West) got Oshkosh on the board again with a dominating 8-2 decision against Diego Morales at 285 pounds. He scored four points in each of the first two periods before allowing Morales to tally a pair of points in the third period.
JP Culver (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg Community) wrapped up the varsity matches with a 9-7 decision over Caleb Hillshafer at 125 pounds. Hillshafer held a 3-2 edge after the first period and Culver flipped the lead headed into the third with a reversal for the only points of the second period. Both wrestlers recorded a reversal in the third stanza, however Culver's takedown gave him the edge he needed to take the victory.
The Titans hit the road for their final dual meet of the season next Friday (Feb. 6). They travel down to Mount Vernon, Iowa, to face Cornell College at 6 p.m.
