Titans Close Out Regular Season With Win Over Pointers

Sammi Beyer tied her season high of 23 points against Stevens Point on Saturday

STEVENS POINT, Wis.- Three Titans reached double-digit points on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 21) as UW-Oshkosh women's basketball wrapped up the regular season portion of its schedule with a 57-41 road win over UW-Stevens Point on the Pointers' Shirley Enger Court in Berg Gymnasium.

The Titans, ranked fifth in the nation by D3hoops.com and seventh by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association, finished the regular season with a 23-2 overall record and a 12-2 mark in WIAC competition. They collected the 17th conference regular season championship in program history and the third straight on Wednesday (Feb. 21) with a 61-35 win over UW-La Crosse at home, becoming the first team to win three straight outright WIAC regular season titles since UW-Green Bay won the 1980-82 Division II segments of the championship. The only other program to ever accomplish the feat was La Crosse from 1972-76.

Oshkosh entered Saturday's matchup ranked first in NCAA Division III with 9.6 turnovers per game, second with a scoring defense of 45.7 points allowed per game, seventh with a 1.28 assist-to-turnover ratio and ninth with just 12.1 fouls committed per game.

The Titans, who shot 41.2 percent (21-51) from the field, 27.8 percent (5-18) from 3-point range and 71.4 percent (10-14) from the field, held the Pointers (15-10, 4-10 WIAC) to a season-low 41 points for the second time. They defeated the Pointers, 64-41, in their first matchup of the year at Kolf Sports Center on January 10.

Oshkosh held Stevens Point to 29.1 percent (16-55) from the field, 27.8 percent (5-18) from 3 and 66.7 percent (4-6) from the line and owned additional advantages in rebounds (34-30), assists (8-6), blocks (2-0), points off turnovers (14-11), points in the paint (26-14) and second chance points (9-4). The Pointers led in bench points (4-3) and steals (7-4). Both teams committed 10 turnovers.

Sammi Beyer (Appleton/Appleton East) led all players with 23 points on 8 of 15 from the field, 3 of 6 from beyond the arc and 4 of 6 from the line while recording seven rebounds, two assists and a steal. She started the game with a perfect first half, going 5 of 5 from the field with a 3 and 2 of 2 from the line for 13 of her points.

Paige Seckar (Oshkosh/Oshkosh West) and Sarah Hardwick (Green Bay/Notre Dame Academy) both tallied 13 points on the day, which also outscored Stevens Point's Emma Kilpatrick and Karissa Smith, who both scored a team-high 12 points. Seckar shot 4 of 9 from the field and 5 of 6 from the line and added 12 rebounds for a double-double while Hardwick went 6-for-11 from the field, added six rebounds and blocked two shots.

Avery Poole (Cottage Grove/Monona Grove) and Bridget Froehlke (Wrightstown/Wrightstown) were the only other two Titans with points at five and three, respectively.

UW-Stevens Point claimed the game's first lead with a game-opening 3-pointer and responded to a layup from Hardwick with one of their own before the Titans claimed their first edge at 7-5 on a Froehlke 3-pointer and a Poole layup. Stevens Point reclaimed the lead once more, however Oshkosh closed out the first quarter on a 6-0 run to lead 13-9.

The Titans continued their spurt with eight more points, leading 21-9 with 6:57 left in the second period. They held the Pointers to two nonconsecutive baskets for the remainder of the half and added runs of seven and four points to push the deficit to 32-14 at the half.

The Titans and Pointers traded the first nine baskets of the third quarter before Kilpatrick knocked in a jumper with 5:04 left to make the score 41-26. Oshkosh then scored eight points in a row to push its lead to a game-high 21 points with 2:37 remaining in the period.

The Pointers held the Titans scoreless for 8:44 between a Hardwick free throw with 2:37 left in the third quarter and a Seckar free throw with 3:03 remaining in the game. Oshkosh started the fourth quarter 0-for-9 from the field and 0-for-3 from the line while Stevens Point scored 11 consecutive points to cut the deficit to 47-40.

Seckar made her second attempt from the line that broke the scoreless streak and Oshkosh tacked on eight more points, including 3-pointers from Poole and Beyer, while holding the Pointers to a single free throw down the stretch.

The Titans, who owns the No. 1 seed in the WIAC Tournament (presented by Culver's), will begin the postseason on Wednesday (Feb. 25). The seven-time conference tournament champions will host the lowest remaining seed in Kolf Sports Center at 7 p.m. If they win Wednesday's matchup, they will host the tournament championship on Friday (Feb. 27) at 7 p.m.
