OSHKOSH, Wis.-Â The UW-Oshkosh Athletics Department is proud to once again celebrate National Girls & Women in Sports Day by recounting highlights provided by our more than 250 student-athletes across 12 women's varsity sports from the Winter 2024-25 through Fall 2025-26 seasons.
Â
Since last year's National Girls & Women in Sports Day, Titan women's programs combined to add the 51st national championship (volleyball) to the department trophy case as well as two WIAC regular season titles (basketball, volleyball), three WIAC postseason championships (gymnastics, softball, volleyball), seven national championship appearances (basketball, gymnastics, softball, indoor/outdoor track & field, volleyball, wrestling) and 21 All-WIAC First Team selections.
Â
The department grew by one sport since the last National Girls & Women in Sports Day as flag football was added in August. Oshkosh women's flag football is set to debut Feb. 25 against Aurora University (Ill.) in the UW-Oshkosh Rec Plex Dome.
Â
National Girls & Women in Sports Day, an annual observance started by the United States Congress in 1987, is also a day of recognition for advocates and trailblazers. This year's NGWSD department pioneer spotlight is Helen Briwa.
Â
Briwa was the UW-Oshkosh women's athletic director from 1971-88 and the head coach of five different varsity programs (badminton, field hockey, softball, track & field, volleyball) during her tenure, which included time as an associate professor in the physical education department.
Â
Briwa was one of three committee members who drafted the constitution for the Wisconsin Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1970 and oversaw a department that won three national titles and 18 WIAC championships. She was inducted into the UW-Oshkosh Hall of Fame in 2006 and the WIAC Hall of Fame in 2022.
