OSHKOSH, Wis.- Nationally ranked UW-Oshkosh softball pounded out 25 total hits on the way to remaining unbeaten with another pair of nonconference home victories Sunday (March 1) at the UW-Oshkosh Rec Plex Dome.
Â
Oshkosh (4-0), ranked 17th in the
National Fastpitch Coaches Association's NCAA Division III poll, defeated UW-Superior, 7-1, before capping the weekend with a 5-1 win over Wisconsin Lutheran College.
Â
Emma Bohn (Rosendale/Laconia) and
Amanda Martineck (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) paced the Titan hit parade with five apiece on the day.
Olivia Ullman (Denmark/Denmark) added four hits for Oshkosh while
Olivia Baugnet (De Pere/De Pere) and
Maddie Crick (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove) both had three as the Titans went a combined 25-for-62 (.403) at the plate with nine extra-base hits Sunday.
Â
In Sunday's opener, Oshkosh raced out to a 6-0 lead after a five-run second inning en route to picking up its fifth straight victory over Superior (2-3).
Â
Sarah Hammerton (Appleton/Appleton West) drove in each of the first four runs, lifting a first inning sacrifice fly and a lacing bases-clearing triple down the third base line during the second, to match her career high with RBIs. Martineck and
Mary Kate Quaid (Aurora, Ill./Oswego East) also added run-scoring hits during the second frame.
Â
After Superior scored in the third inning to pull within 5-1, Ullman completed the scoring when she stole third base and dashed home on an errant throw by the catcher during the home half of the sixth frame.
Â
The Titans collected 13 hits as Bohn went 3-for-3 and Martineck 3-for-4. Baugnet, Quaid and Ullman each recorded a pair of hits. Ullman tripled and stole two bases.
Â
The offensive output was more than enough support for the Oshkosh pitching duo of
Kiran Sanford (Two Rivers/Mishicot) and
Grace Nardi (Marquette, Mich./Negaunee).
Â
Sanford (2-0) picked up the win, allowing an unearned run on three hits and one walk with five strikeouts across the first four innings. Nardi then earned her first save of the year and second career by tossing three scoreless frames on three hits and one walk with four strikeouts.
Â
Superior starting pitcher Abby Mitchell (1-1) suffered the loss, surrendering six runs – one earned – on eight hits over the first 1.2 innings. She struck out one without issuing a walk.
Â
Yellowjackets leadoff hitter Carly Stuckmayer had two of the team's six hits, which were all singles.
Â
Oshkosh then completed an unbeaten opening weekend by overcoming its first deficit of the season against Wisconsin Lutheran.
Â
The Warriors tallied a run in the home half of the first inning, but the Titans answered with a run of their own during the top of the second frame via a Crick double that plated Martineck.
Â
The Titans took the lead for good with a three-run fourth inning that featured a go-ahead RBI double from Bohn, a run-scoring groundout by
Morgan Miller (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) and an Ullman RBI single.
Â
Brianne Lopez's (Volo, Ill./Grant Community) RBI groundout in the top of the fifth frame capped the scoring.
Â
Wisconsin Lutheran (0-1) did not advance a runner past first base for four consecutive innings until getting the potential tying run to the on-deck circle with no outs during the bottom of the seventh. However, Titans relief pitcher
Skyler Calmes (Kaukauna/Kaukauna) retired the next three Warriors, in order, to thwart the threat and secure the win.
Â
Crick was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles to lead Oshkosh's 12-hit effort. Bohn, Martineck and Ullman contributed two hits each.
Â
Brianna Bougie (Oshkosh/Oshkosh West), making her first start this season in the Oshkosh pitcher's circle, improved to 1-0 on the year after holding Wisconsin Lutheran to one run on five hits across the first six frames. She struck out two and walked none.
Â
Warriors relief pitcher Katelyn Ruth was charged with the loss, yielding four runs on seven hits and two walks with a pair of strikeouts in three innings of work.
Â
Anna Bracke doubled among her two hits and drove in the lone Warriors run.
Â
The Titans remain at home to host St. Norbert College for a nonconference doubleheader beginning at noon Saturday, March 7 in the UW-Oshkosh Rec Plex Dome.
