CLERMONT, Fla.- UW-Oshkosh softball pounded out 22 hits, including 14 during a battle of nationally ranked programs, en route to securing a pair of comfortable nonconference wins to wrap up its 10-game Sunshine State trip Wednesday (March 25) in Clermont, Fla.
Â
Oshkosh (13-3), ranked 19th in the NCAA Division III by the
National Fastpitch Coaches Association, downed Kalamazoo College (Mich.), 11-2 in five innings, before routing 23rd-ranked DePauw University (Ind.), 10-4.
Â
The Titans scored double-digit runs twice in the same day for the first time since wins of 13-2 and 11-0 at UW-Platteville on May 1, 2022.
Â
Ten different Titans recorded hits on the day, including
Kelly Selzer (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich), who went 5-for-8 with a walk, double, home run and six runs batted in. The homer was the first by a Titan this season and the first collegiate longball for Selzer.
Â
Brianne Lopez (Volo, Ill./Grant Community) and
Olivia Ullman (Denmark/Denmark) both added three hits for Oshkosh, which also received four RBIs from
Amanda Martineck (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East). Martineck now paces the squad with 14 RBIs on the year after driving in 10 runs over the course of the Titans' 10 Florida games.
Â
During the lopsided victory over Kalamazoo, Oshkosh turned a 2-1 deficit after two innings into a 5-2 lead during the third frame. The Titans then invoked the eight-run rule with a six-run top of the fourth inning.
Â
The Titans reclaimed the lead for good at 3-2 following a double-steal of second and third bases by Lopez and
Emma Bohn (Rosendale/Laconia). The Hornets catcher threw the ball out of the reach of their third baseman, allowing Lopez to cross the plate with the go-ahead run.
Â
Oshkosh opened the scoring with an RBI single by Martineck during the home half of the first inning.
Haylie Wittman (Kaukauna/Kaukauna) scored on an error to knot the score at 2 before the eventful double-steal provided the Titans the lead.
Â
The Titans' four-run third inning concluded with a Martineck RBI groundout and a run-scoring double from Selzer.
Â
Oshkosh later put the finishing touches on the win with its six-run outburst during the fourth inning. The first four runs of the rally came as a direct result of errors as
Haylie Wittman (Kaukauna/Kaukauna) touched the plate ahead of a bases-clearing pair of throwing errors on the same play that allowed Lopez, Bohn and Ullman to score in succession.
Â
Sarah Hammerton (Appleton/Appleton West) plated Martineck with a single to give the Titans a 10-2 lead.
Mary Kate Quaid (Aurora, Ill./Oswego East) then plated Hammerton to cap the scoring.
Â
Lopez was 2-for-2 with three runs scored and three stolen bases for the Titans. Martineck drove in three runs.
Â
Oshkosh outhit Kalamazoo, 8-3. The Hornets committed five errors that led to seven unearned runs.
Â
Titans starting pitcher
Grace Nardi (Marquette, Mich./Negaunee) (4-0) earned the win, yielding two runs on three hits in four innings pitched. She walked two and struck out a season-best 10. Nardi, who finished one strikeout shy of matching her career best, struck out double-digit batters for the second time in her career.
Â
Titans relief pitcher
Brianna Bougie (Oshkosh/Oshkosh West) retired all three batters she faced, including two via strikeouts, in the top of the fifth frame.
Â
Alyssa Hinkley and London Rabb had RBI hits for the Hornets.
Â
Kalamazoo starting pitcher Maddie Potts (0-6) was charged with the complete-game loss after giving up 11 runs (four runs) on eight hits and four walks with one strikeout across six innings.
Â
In the battle of nationally ranked programs, Oshkosh's
Kiran Sanford (Two Rivers/Mishicot) was perfect through four innings as the Titans raced out to leads of 3-0 after one frame, 5-0 after two, 7-0 after four and 8-0 during the middle of the sixth.
Â
Sanford (7-1) set down the first 13 DePauw hitters until Tigers starting pitcher Alex Romero-Salas singled to right field in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sanford exited after six innings of work, ceding just a pair of singles and striking out four without issuing a walk.
Â
Selzer went 4-for-4 with a towering two-run homer down the left field line and a season-high five RBIs.
Â
Ullman was 3-for-5 with a double, three runs scored and three runs batted in. She leads the team with 19 hits and 16 runs scored this season while sharing the team lead with four doubles.
Â
Oshkosh's 14 hits were one short of its season best as Bohn chipped in a pair of singles.
The Titans' 8-0 cushion featured four RBIs from Selzer, two RBIs by Ullman, and one apiece from Martineck and
Morgan Miller (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg).
Â
The Tigers staved off a run-rule loss with a three-run sixth inning, but the Titans got two insurance runs in the top of the seventh frame following RBI singles by Selzer and Ullman.
Angelese Cruz, Ella Kuenster and Eliza Rammel each had RBIs for DePauw.
Â
Romero-Salas (5-3) suffered the loss in the DePauw pitcher's circle, surrendering seven runs on 12 hits across the first five innings. She walked none and struck out one.
Â
Oshkosh heads to Bloomington, Ill., for four games this weekend, beginning with contests Saturday (March 28) against host Illinois Wesleyan University at 10 a.m. and Calvin University (Mich.) at 12:15 p.m.
