WINTER HAVEN, Fla.- Connor Walters (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) and
Joe Richardson (Lake Forest, Ill./Stevenson) battled through rainy conditions and multiple lightning strikes in the area to combine for UW-Oshkosh's 13th no-hitter on Thursday (March 5) as the Titans opened the season with a 10-0, seven-inning win over Concordia Moorhead (Minn.).
Â
UW-Oshkosh opened the season at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational after its originally scheduled February 21 season opener at North Park University (Ill.) was postponed to March 24 due to poor weather conditions.
Â
Walters threw six complete innings and fanned seven Cobbers while allowing four batters to reach on walks on his way to his first win of the season. He retired the side four times during the game, including three consecutive swinging strikeouts in the top of the fifth. Richardson came in as relief for the seventh inning and kept Concordia Moorhead hitless while walking one and adding another strikeout.
Â
The no-hitter was the second for UW-Oshkosh in two years following
Brett Gaynor's (Long Grove, Ill./Stevenson) complete game no-hitter against UW-River Falls at Tiedemann Field on April 17, 2025, and the Titans' first combined no-hitter since Brian Herzog and Chad Woller completed the combined bid against Milwaukee School of Engineering at home on May 10, 1999. The no-hitter is the sixth in NCAA Division III baseball this season.
Â
The Titans (1-0), ranked 19th in the nation by
D3baseball.com and 14th by the
American Baseball Coaches Association, won their season opener for the third time in the last four years with the victory and extended their all-time series record to 6-0 over Concordia Moorhead (4-2).
Â
Oshkosh tallied 13 hits on the day, led by 3-for-4 marks by
Brenden Max (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville),
Braydon Skenandore (De Pere/West De Pere) and
Danny Connelly (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein). Max scored twice and recorded an RBI while Skenandore scored once and sent two runs in, and Connelly added two more RBI.
Â
Aaron Davis (Darien, Ill./Downers Grove South) recorded a game-high three RBI with a 2-RBI single and a sacrifice bunt.
Â
The Titans swiped seven bags and reached base an additional four times with three walks and a hit by pitch.
Â
Cobber Alex Claussen (0-1) was assigned the loss in his first appearance of the season, going 3.0 innings and allowing five runs on six hits, a walk and a hit by pitch with four strikeouts. Brett Schlangen came in to start the fourth inning and went another 3.0 innings. He allowed one run and struck out two against three hits allowed before Bergan Bauman relieved him at the start of the seventh inning. Bauman recorded one out in Oshkosh's four-run frame, walking two and giving up four hits.
Â
Oshkosh scored its first run in the bottom of the first inning when
Owen Housinger (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Stevenson) scored
Logan Schill (Pewaukee/Pewaukee), who was hit by a pitch in the Titans' first plate appearance before stealing second and third base, with a sacrifice fly to center field.
Â
The Titans added two runs in the second inning on Davis' single, followed by RBI singles for both Max and Skenandore in the third inning that increased Oshkosh's lead to 5-0.
Â
Concordia Moorhead did not allow a Titan to pass second base in the fourth inning and induced two groundouts and a flyout in the fifth.
Â
Braydon Skenandore (De Pere/West De Pere) led off the sixth inning with a single, stole second during
Gavin Persson's (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) at-bat and pulled off a double steal with Connelly after the catcher beat out on infield single. Davis then recorded his third RBI with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Â
Jack McNamara (La Grange, Ill./Lyons) reached with a single to lead off the seventh inning, but was forced out at second base on a fielder's choice by
Owen Housinger (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Stevenson). The Titans then loaded the bases as
Cash Kaczmarek (Barrington, Ill./Lake Zurich) drew a walk and Max singled. Skenandore singled before being pinch ran for by Gavin Wick and Persson was walked, making the score 8-0. Connelly sent Max and Wick across the plate in the following at-bat with a two-RBI single that ended the game.
Â
The Titans will face Concordia University Chicago (Ill.) on Friday (March 6) at 9:30 a.m. Eastern. In six meetings dating back to 1983, the Titans and Cougars are 3-3 against each other all time. Oshkosh won the teams' last meeting, 8-5, in a neutral site battle in Sauget, Ill. on February 29, 2020.
