AUBURNDALE, Fla.- Tied at two runs apiece in the top of the eighth inning,
Logan Schill (Pewaukee/Pewaukee) successfully stole third base and took advantage of a bad throw from the plate to score the go-ahead run of UW-Oshkosh's 3-2 win over The College of St. Scholastica (Minn.) in Auburndale, Fla. on Saturday night (March 7).
UW-Oshkosh (2-1), ranked 19th in the nation by
D3baseball.com and 14th by the
American Baseball Coaches Association, scored the first two runs of the game in the second inning and led until the Saints (3-3) tallied a run in both the fourth and fifth innings. Schill's run represented the only score in each of the last four frames.
Jack McKellips (Oshkosh/Lourdes Academy) and
Aaron Davis (Darien, Ill./Downers Grove South) both collected a pair of hits in the contest. McKellips went 2-for-5 with a triple and Davis went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.
Owen Housinger (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Stevenson),
Gavin Persson (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) and Schill represented the rest of seven hits at one apiece.
Schill led the Titans will three stolen bases, trailed with one by McKellips and Housinger.
On the mound,
Baris Brua (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) made his first collegiate start and pitched six complete innings. He allowed the two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out five St. Scholastica batters, including two in the third and sixth innings.
Hoyt Keller (Wautoma/Wautoma) (1-0) came into the game in the seventh inning and induced three consecutive outs to hold the Saints off he scoreboard. As he was the pitcher of record when Oshkosh scored in the eighth inning, he earned the win.
Benje Hencke (De Pere/West De Pere) recorded a non-statistical hold in the eighth inning and got a groundout before allowing a single. He then recorded outs in the next two at-bats on a fielder's choice and a swinging strikeout.
Ben Buehring (Oshkosh/Oshkosh West) earned the save in his first appearance in black and gold by fanning two Saints before Andrew Beffel, who was pinch running for Carson Jesberger after Jesberger was hit by a pitch, was caught stealing second.
Across 17 all-time matchups between the programs, UW-Oshkosh moved to 12-5 over the Saints.
The Titans wrap up their trip to the Sunshine State against the University of Mount Union (Ohio), which is receiving votes in both national polls, on Sunday (March 8) at 10 a.m. (Eastern). Oshkosh and the Purple Raiders have met just one time before with the Titans earning a 4-1 victory in the 2004 season opener in Port Charlotte, Fla.
