Falcons Claim Doubleheader Win Over Titans

RIVER FALLS, Wis.- UW-River Falls secured its first series win over UW-Oshkosh baseball in 23 years on Sunday (April 19) with wins of 8-4 and 8-2 at First National Bank of River Falls Field.

The Falcons (17-12, 10-8 WIAC), who did not sponsor an intercollegiate baseball team between 2003 and 2024, won the 2002 series, 3-1. Oshkosh (11-17, 7-10 WIAC) took the 2025 series by the same record. Both series were played in Oshkosh.

River Falls held a 14-11 edge in hits and committed three errors to the Titans' four. The hosts also held advantages in extra-base hits (4-2), stolen bases (7-1) and hit the only home run of the day. Oshkosh also left 19 runners on base against the Falcons' 11.

Logan Schill (Pewaukee/Pewaukee) had two hits, including a double, in the first game and stole a base in the second. Trevor Morris (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) collected a pair of hits in the second game and had the Titans' lone extra-base hit, a double.

In the first game, Oshkosh did not bring more than three batters to the plate and did not advance to third base until the fourth while River Falls scored on a sacrifice fly in the second inning and an RBI single and a bases-loaded hit by pitch in the third.

The Falcons added three runs on four hits in the sixth inning. Connor Walters (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville), Oshkosh's starter, finished his day after the frame with 6.0 innings of work. He allowed seven runs (six earned) on six hits, two walks and three hit batters while striking out seven, including two in the second, third and fifth innings. Walters was assigned the loss and dropped to 2-3 on the season.

Benje Hencke (De Pere/West De Pere) worked a scoreless seventh inning, getting out of a second and third situation with back-to-back strikeouts.

Oshkosh got on the board in the top of the eighth inning. Morris got on with a hit by pitch, advanced to second when Braydon Skenandore (De Pere/West De Pere) was also hit by a pitch and moved to third base when Brenden Max (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) singled to center field. An Aaron Davis (Darien, Ill./Downers Grove South) single through the left side plated Morris and Skenandore added a run on a fielder's choice for Cullen Kirchberg (DeForest/DeForest). Davis and Kirchberg were both left on base when Danny Connelly (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) struck out.

The Falcons scored their eighth run in the bottom half of the eighth inning on an error.

River Falls' starter, Brett Sullivan, improved to 2-3 with a six-inning showing that included three strikeouts against no runs on three hits, a walk and a hit batter.

After a pair of scoreless innings to start the second game, River Falls tallied the first run with a two-run home run off Oshkosh starter Baris Brua (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) (2-3). Brua pitched the first six innings of the contest and struck out two batters, but allowed three hits, three walks and hit two batters for seven runs (four earned).

The Falcons added a run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning.

Gavin Persson (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) got the Titans' scoring going in the fifth inning when he drew a bases-loaded walk, however back-to-back outs stranded all three runners.

In the top of the sixth, Oshkosh tied the game at 3-3 when Morris scored on a balk and Skenandore reached home on a Kirchberg sacrifice bunt. Davis and Connelly, who both walked in the inning, were both left on base.

The tie was short-lived as the Falcons started the seventh inning with a hit by pitch, a single, a run on an error and a walk to force Oshkosh to take out Brua for Ryan Richter (Waukesha/Waukesha West). River Falls scored four more runs on a bases-clearing double and a sacrifice fly, making the score 8-3.

Oshkosh scored once more in the game while Richter held the Falcons scoreless in the eighth. Max scored an unearned run when Connelly hit a sacrifice fly out to center field.

The Titans return to Tiedemann Field for their next contests, hosting UW-Whitewater (25-3, 17-0 WIAC), ranked seventh in NCAA Division III by D3baseball.com and eighth by the American Baseball Coaches Association, on Wednesday (April 22). Game times are set for 1 and 3 p.m.

In the teams' first doubleheader in Whitewater on April 8, the Warhawks held off Oshkosh for an 8-78 victory in the first game and earned a 15-6 win in the second.
