Titans Shut Out Sabres Twice

Emam Bohn went 5-for-6 with five RBI during the Titans' pair of shutout wins over Marian

FOND DU LAC, Wis.- Nationally ranked UW-Oshkosh softball collected 24 hits on the way to notching a pair of shutout victories at Marian University on Wednesday (April 22) in Fond du Lac.

Oshkosh (23-5-1) won the first game, 8-0 in five innings, before securing a 4-0 victory during the nightcap. The Titans have now won their past eight meetings with Marian and 22 of the last 23 in the series.

Marian (14-14) was shut out in both ends of a doubleheader for the first time this season.

The Titans backed Kiran Sanford's (Two Rivers/Mishicot) two-hitter in the opener with 11 hits and followed with 13 hits in support of Grace Nardi's (Marquette, Mich./Negaunee) six-hitter. Oshkosh, ranked 16th in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association's NCAA Division III poll, compiled a .400 batting average, a .500 slugging percentage and struck out just once during its final two nonconference contests of the regular season.

Oshkosh, which entered Wednesday ranked fifth nationally with a 4.43 strikeout-to-walk ratio, sixth with a 1.67 ERA and ninth with a 1.07 WHIP ratio, saw those numbers improve to 4.51, 1.56 and 1.06, respectively, following the team's eighth and ninth shutouts of the year.

Emma Bohn (Rosendale/Laconia), Brianne Lopez (Volo, Ill./Grant Community) and Amanda Martineck (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) combined to go 16-for-20 at the plate on the day to lead the Oshkosh offense. Bohn went 5-for-6 with five runs batted in while Lopez was 5-for-7 with three runs scored, and Martineck 6-for-7 with three doubles and four RBIs.

During Wednesday's first contest, Oshkosh scored twice in the top of the second inning, four times during the third frame and twice more in the fourth en route to earning its fifth victory via the run rule this season.

Bohn delivered a two-run double to plate both Mary Kate Quaid (Aurora, Ill./Oswego East) and Martineck in the second inning.

The Titans' four-run fourth frame featured a Martineck RBI single that scored Lopez, a Bohn two RBI double that brought home Olivia Ullman (Denmark/Denmark) and Martineck, and a Haylie Wittman (Kaukauna/Kaukauna) double that plated Bohn for a 6-0 advantage.

Oshkosh later invoked the eight-run rule when Martineck's two-run single allowed Lopez and Ullman to cross the plate in the fourth inning.

Martineck went 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and three RBIs. Bohn and Lopez were both 2-for-3. Lopez scored twice while Bohn had a pair of doubles and drove in a career-high four runs.

Sanford (13-1), who headed into the day fifth in the country with a 9.17 strikeout-to-walk ratio, went the distance to earn the win, yielding just two hits. She struck out eight without issuing a walk. Sanford, who extended her streak to 28 innings without allowing an earned run, registered her fifth shutout on the year and lowered her ERA to 1.15.

Marian starting pitcher Savanna Knuth (6-7) suffered the loss after ceding six runs on seven hits and one walk with one strikeout across the first three innings.

During the nightcap the Titans scored a single run in the second inning before creating separation with a three-run fifth frame.

Morgan Miller (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) got Oshkosh on the board with an RBI single that plated Martineck for a 1-0 lead.

The fifth-inning insurance runs came on RBIs from Quaid, Martineck and Bohn as Lopez, Ullman and Autumn Freismuth (Fond du Lac/Fond du Lac) each crossed the plate for a 4-0 advantage.

Marian left the bases loaded during the home half of the first inning and went on to strand two baserunners in each of the third, fifth and sixth frames.

Nardi (7-1) recorded her first shutout this season and the second of her career after limiting the Sabres to six hits. She walked three and struck out nine while lowering her season ERA to 2.12.

Bohn went 3-for-3 with an RBI, a sacrifice bunt and a stolen base.

Martineck was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, one run scored and an RBI. She currently leads the squad with 22 RBIs this year.

Lopez went 3-for-4 and scored a run from the leadoff spot.

Hope Matta accounted for two of Marian's six hits.

Sabres starting pitcher Sabrina Di Vito (5-5) was charged with the complete-game loss, surrendering four runs (one earned) on 13 hits.

Oshkosh (4-1 WIAC) returns home to host UW-Stout (17-13, 3-3 WIAC) for a league doubleheader on Saturday (April 25). The first pitch for the Titans' Senior Day is set for 1 p.m. at Mary Beth Nienhaus Softball Complex.
