WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis.- Danny Connelly (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) scored on an
Owen Housinger (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Stevenson) sacrifice bunt in the fourth inning and two runs scored in the sixth when
Trevor Morris (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) singled up the middle of the infield during UW-Oshkosh baseball's 3-1 win over UW-Stevens Point in Wisconsin Rapids on Friday (April 3).
Â
The second game of the doubleheader – moved to Wisconsin Rapids from Oshkosh due to poor field conditions – reached the bottom of the sixth inning with the Titans up 9-4 before being suspended due to heavy rain. The game will resume at Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High School on Sunday (April 5) at 11 a.m. and the remaining two games will follow.
Â
Brenden Max (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) went 3-for-4 at the plate in in the first game of the day and scored one run, followed by
Trevor Morris' (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) 2-for-3 day with a pair of RBI and a sacrifice bunt.
Logan Schill (Pewaukee/Pewaukee),
Jack McNamara (La Grange, Ill./Lyons) and Connelly accounted for the rest of Oshkosh's hits with one apiece.
Â
Starting pitcher
Josh Jansen (DeForest/DeForest) went 7.0 innings and faced the first batter of the eighth frame on his way to collecting his first win of the season, moving to 1-3. He struck out six Pointers, including two in the third inning, while allowing one run on five hits, two walks and a hit batter.
Â
Ryan Richter (Waukesha/Waukesha West) relieved Jansen in the eighth and picked up his second save of the season with a pair of scoreless innings. He allowed hits to the first two batters of the ninth inning before inducing a pair of foul outs to first baseman
Braydon Skenandore (De Pere/West De Pere) and a groundout to Morris at second base.
Â
The Titans advanced to second base twice in the first three innings. Schill got on with an error in the first inning and moved up a base when McNamara walked. Housinger reached base on a fielder's choice and moved to second when Morris singled to center. Both runners were stranded however, and the score remained 0-0 entering the fourth frame.
Â
After Jansen left a Pointer in base in the top of the fourth inning, Connelly led off the bottom half of the inning with a single, moving around the bases on
Aaron Davis' (Darien, Ill./Downers Grove South) sacrifice bunt and Max's single to right center before crossing home when Housinger laid down another sacrifice.
Â
Oshkosh chased Stevens Point starter Kenny Schultz (0-2) in the sixth inning when McNamara singled through the right side of the infield as the leadoff batter. McNamara was caught stealing second for the first out, however Connelly drew a five-pitch walk and scored alongside Max, who chased the Pointers' first reliever, when Morris singled through the middle of the infield to create a 3-0 lead.
Â
While the Titans did not score again, their defense held Stevens Point to a leadoff home run in the eighth inning and forced the Pointers to put five total pitchers on the mound across the game.
Â
Schill threatened to score in the bottom of the seventh inning, knocking a one-out double off the top of the left field fence and advancing to third when McNamara grounded out to first, but he was left 90 feet from home as Connelly went down on strikes for the third out.
Â
The second game of the doubleheader will pick up in the bottom of the sixth inning with Connelly, who reached on a walk, on first base with no outs. Davis will be the first batter when play resumes.
