Coach Matt McLagan
Originally from South Minneapolis, Minn., Coach Matt McLagan brings a wealth of experience and passion for football to every role he undertakes. Currently residing in Stockbridge, Matt is supported by his wife, Becca, who serves as a teaching, learning & technology specialist with the UW-Oshkosh School of Nursing, and their energetic son, Miller, who keeps them on their toes at four years old.
Coaching Journey
Matt's football journey began at NCAA Division II St. Cloud State University, where he played linebacker from 2004 to 2009 while pursuing a degree in Physical Education & Sport Science. His exceptional talent and leadership on the field earned him back-to-back North Central Conference All-Conference linebacker honors in 2007 and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference honors in 2008.
Transitioning seamlessly into coaching, Matt started his career at St. Cloud State from 2009 to 2011, focusing on strength and outside linebackers. He then broadened his coaching experience at National Association for Intercollegiate Athletics Jamestown College (N.D.) for a season before moving to Division II Northern State University (S.D.). At Northern State from 2012 to 2016, Matt served as the defensive line coach and later as defensive coordinator in 2015 and 2016, guiding his players to excellence on the field.
In addition to his coaching roles, Matt contributed significantly to the football program at Division III Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) as a consultant and then defensive coordinator from 2019 to 2023, providing strategic insights and mentorship to the team.
Current Role and Focus
With the transition of technology coordinator duties to Alex Jagla, Matt is excited to refocus his efforts on enhancing team academics, the defensive secondary and as special teams coordinator. His commitment to student-athletes extends beyond the game, aiming to foster academic excellence and personal growth both on and off the field.
Coach McLagan's dedication to football, coupled with his passion for education, continues to inspire and shape the lives of young athletes under his mentorship.
