Liam Thompson enters his first year as the top assistant coach for the UW-oshkosh men's basketball program in 2025-26.

Thompson comes to Oshkosh from Illinois Wesleyan University, where he was an assistant coach and the offensive coordinator for the Titans’ men’s basketball program in 2026. He helped the program to a 26-5 record with a 13-3 league mark, the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin regular season and tournament championships and a run to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division III Championship.

Along with the rest of the 2026 CCIW Coaching Staff of the Year, Thompson helped develop three All-CCIW selections, two of which earned D3hoops.com All-Region honors. Noah Cleveland collected was named the D3hoops National Rookie of the Year along with his first team All-American award. Mason Funk, who was a finalist for the prestigious Jostens Trophy, was named to the fifth team. Cleveland was also selected as a first team All-American and the district player of the year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

The stop in Bloomington was Thompson’s second. He was previously a graduate assistant for the varsity team and the varsity reserve head coach at Illinois Wesleyan from 2022-24. The Titans were the regular season CCIW champions in 2024.

Between his stints at Illinois Wesleyan, Thompson served as an assistant coach and the offensive coordinator at Wabash College (Ind.) in 2025. The Little Giants went 17-9 overall and 13-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference which was good for a second-place finish in the league and an automatic first-round bye in the conference tournament. Two Little Giants were named All-NCAC in 2025, including defensive player of the year Noah Hupmann.

A native of Ridley Park, Pa., Thompson played basketball for four years at Elizabethtown College (Pa.) and was part of a program that improved its win total by seven games from his freshman season and voted him team captain in his senior year that was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Thompson graduated from Elizabethtown with his bachelor’s degree in political science and a psychology minor in 2021. In 2024, he earned his master’s degree in sport management from Illinois State University.
