15th-Ranked Argonauts Overpower Titans

Shannon Miles and Crystal Thompson each drove in four runs as the University of West Florida swept a doubleheader against the UW-Oshkosh women's softball team on Monday (March 22) in Pensacola, Fla.

The Argonauts (27-4) rode an eight-run fourth inning to tally a 10-1 victory after five innings in the opener. UW-Oshkosh (3-3) committed six errors as it dropped the second contest, 9-7.

The Titans fell behind 1-0 in the second inning of the first contest after Miles blasted a home run to right field. UW-Oshkosh tied the game a short time later, when Julia Burns (So. - Verona) doubled and scored on a single from Kelley Koebler (So. - Janesville).

The University of West Florida, ranked 15th in the NCAA Division II by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, marked eight hits in the fourth frame to break the game open. Ashleigh Allgood advanced to third to begin the frame and later scored when Danielle Kildow smashed a double.

The Argonauts tallied four more times on a pair of two-run hits by Kaley Kania and Crystal Thompson, making the score 6-1.

With Thompson and Amber Ingram on base, Miles crushed her second home run of the game for a 9-1 advantage.

Victoria Harvey earned the victory with four innings of work, surrendering only one run and four hits while striking out four batters. Allgood pitched the fifth inning and did not allow a hit.

Ashley Kowalewski (So. - Greenfield) took the loss for the Titans, pitching five innings and giving up 10 runs on 13 hits while striking out four.

UW-Oshkosh opened the second contest with two early tallies, as Sydnee Wyss (Jr. - Monroe) and Whitney Tornow (Sr. - Neenah) both scored in the first frame. The Argonauts made the score 2-1 after Ingram scored on a base hit from Allgood.

The Titans tallied three more in the second inning, with Brittany Roen (Fr. - Beaver Dam) scoring on a single from Erin Kelly (Fr. - La Crosse). Kelly scored on an RBI double from Amie Heinzelman (Sr. - Monroe) and Tornow ended the attack by knocking in Heinzelman.

The University of West Florida cut its deficit to 5-2 in the second when Kildow scored on a double to left field by Ingram. Burns added another run for the Titans in the third inning, scoring on Kelly's single up the middle.

Ingram reached on a fielding error to start the fifth inning and later scored on a double from Miles. After Miles advanced to third on a wild pitch, Thompson brought her home with a single to make the score 6-4.

UW-Oshkosh scored its final run in the sixth frame, when Heinzelman tripled to right field and scored after Wyss smashed an RBI double.

With the Titans leading 7-4, Kildow walked and Karri Bisbee singled to start the sixth inning. Kania then smoked a two-run single to left field to cut the lead to 7-6. With Allgood, Kania and Miles on base, Thompson doubled and advanced to third on a throwing error, plating three runs to create the game's final score.

The Titans tallied nine hits in the contest, receiving two each from Tornow, Heinzelman, Kelly and Lisa Hart (So. - Oshkosh). The University of West Florida had 10 hits, including three from Allgood and two apiece by Thompson and Ingram.

Courtney Wautier (Fr. - Brussels) pitched 5.1 innings for the Titans, giving up six runs and seven hits while striking out four. Kowalewski took the loss for UW-Oshkosh in the sixth, surrendering three runs on three hits.

Allgood earned the complete-game win for the Argonauts, allowing seven runs on nine hits and striking out six batters.
