Claire Voris smacked a two-run single to give herself the pitching victory and help nationally-ranked Washington University (Mo.) post a 6-3 win over the UW-Oshkosh women's softball team on Friday (April 2) in Grinnell, Iowa. The Titans had their second contest against Graceland College (Iowa) postponed to Saturday (April 3) due to rain.
Washington University (19-4) marked the first run in the opening inning with a single from Ashton Hitchcock.
Amie Heinzelman (Sr. • Monroe) smashed a triple to begin the Titans' (5-8) first frame. She later scored on a sacrifice fly from Sydnee Wyss (Jr. • Monroe), while Whitney Tornow (Sr. • Neenah) crushed a home run to gain a 2-1 advantage.
The Bears answered in the third frame, knotting the contest at 2 when Megan Fieser scored after a UW-Oshkosh error. Voris then brought home two more runs with her single, which scored Hitchcock and Corissa Santos.
Washington University, ranked 15th in the NCAA Division III by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, marked another run in the sixth frame after Caitlyn Hoffman scored on a wild pitch. Alyssa Abramoski tallied the final run for the Bears when she scored on an error by the Titans.
Voris earned the complete-game win for the Bears, allowing three runs and five hits as she struck out five. Ashley Kowalewski (So. • Greenfield) took the complete-game loss, giving up six runs on 10 hits, striking out six and walking two.
The Titans notched four hits in the contest, led by Tornow with two. Washington University had 10 hits, receiving four from Fieser and two from Carter Malouf.
