Box Score 2 UW-Oshkosh amassed an early seven-run lead and overcame four UW-Stevens Point home runs as it notched a 13-10 baseball victory over the nationally ranked Pointers on Wednesday (April 7) at Tiedemann Field.
The second game of the doubleheader was suspended in the fifth inning and will be concluded on April 14 when UW-Stevens Point visits UW-Oshkosh for another set of WIAC contests. UW-Stevens Point, ranked 19th in the NCAA Division III by D3baseball.com, was leading 11-1 over UW-Oshkosh in the suspended game.
UW-Oshkosh (8-7/1-0 WIAC) sprinted out to a 6-0 lead in the first game after scoring five runs in the first inning and one in the second. The Titans' opening inning featured three hits, including a two-run single by Doug Beattie (Fr. • Escanaba, Mich.) and a three-run home run by Troy Mrkvicka (So. • Greendale). Travis Derocha (So. • Green Bay) added a solo home run in the second inning.
UW-Stevens Point (9-5/0-1 WIAC), which shared last year's WIAC title with UW-Oshkosh and UW-Whitewater, scored its first run of the game on a Dan Douglas single in the third inning. Kyle Kannenberg (Sr. • Oshkosh) responded to that score with a two-run double in the fourth inning to give UW-Oshkosh an 8-1 lead.
An infield single by Sam Spurney knocked in a UW-Stevens Point run in the fifth inning. The Pointers then tallied three more runs in the sixth inning to cut their deficit to 8-5. UW-Stevens Point marked four hits in the sixth frame, including a two-run home run by Justin Jirschele and a solo home run by Jared Surman.
Kannenberg extended the Titans' cushion with a run-scoring single in the sixth inning and a two-run single in the eighth. UW-Oshkosh tacked on two more runs in the eighth inning on Blake Berger's (Jr. • Star Prairie) single and Tyler Kamps' (Fr. • Appleton) groundout.
In the ninth inning, UW-Stevens Point made things interesting when it scored five runs on five hits. The Pointers smashed a pair of home runs in the inning, a solo shot by Jeremy Richter and a three-run blast by Spurney. UW-Stevens Point also scored on a groundout by Brad Archambeau.
UW-Oshkosh compiled 11 hits, with three belonging to Kannenberg and two to Derocha. Kannenberg finished the game with five runs batted in, while Derocha and Nolan Fadness (Jr. • Eau Claire) each scored three times.
UW-Stevens Point's 16 hits featured four by Surman, three by Spurney and two by both Jirschele and Eric Fritz.
Kannenberg pitched all nine innings for the Titans and registered his third complete game of the season. He struck out three batters and walked two.
Joel Delorit took the pitching loss for UW-Stevens Point after yielding eight runs and six hits during the first five innings of play. Ryan Povlick completed the contest for UW-Stevens Point and surrendered five runs and five hits in three innings of work.
UW-Oshkosh hosts UW-Superior on Saturday (April 10) at Tiedemann Field.
