Titans Spite Blue Devils For First WIAC Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

After losing eight one-run games this season, the UW-Oshkosh baseball team recorded a pair of walk-off victories by the slimmest of margins against UW-Stout on Saturday (May 1) at Tiedemann Field.

The Titans (14-18/7-11 WIAC) capitalized on a fielding error to pull out the opener, 7-6, in the bottom of the ninth. During the second contest, UW-Oshkosh tallied the game's final five runs, including the winner on a walk, to take a 5-4 decision. It was the first conference doubleheader sweep for the Titans this year.

Both teams marked in the first inning of game one, with UW-Stout (9-22/4-14) going ahead on a fielding error. UW-Oshkosh responded with four tallies in its turn, including one on Blake Berger's (Jr. • Star Prairie) double and two more on Tyler Kamps' (Fr. • Appleton) two-run homer.

The Blue Devils tacked on single scores in the third and fifth frames, getting a solo home run by Jake Duske and a run-scoring single from Josh Anderson. A sacrifice fly in the third and a Derek Layton (Fr. • Cross Plains) single during the fifth answered to give UW-Oshkosh a 6-3 cushion.

UW-Stout amassed three runs on a trio of hits to tie the game in the sixth inning. Duske added an RBI single, while Brian Giebel doubled home his team's fifth run. After a groundout equaled the score, neither team marked before the Titans did with two outs in the final at-bat.

Nate Hanson tossed all 8.2 innings as he took the loss, allowing one earned run and 13 hits. The Titans' Luke Westphal (So. • Clintonville) fired eight frames, yielding four earned runs, before Kyle Kannenberg (Sr. • Oshkosh) earned the victory with a scoreless three outs.

The Blue Devils, assisted by five walks, did all their damage in the nightcap during the opening frame. A fielding error allowed the first two runs to score, while another touched the plate on a throwing miscue. It then became 4-0 on a wild pitch before the Titans got out of a bases-loaded jam.

Kamps connected for another long ball to put UW-Oshkosh on the board during the fourth. Cutting the deficit in half, Derek Hiroskey (Jr. • Kimberly) posted a sacrifice fly after Nolan Fadness (Jr. • Eau Claire) tripled to open the fifth inning.

The Titans used a Berger groundout to tally again in the seventh and pull closer. With two men out, Kannenberg delivered a run-scoring single to tie the game at 4. Following an error and an intentional walk in the last frame, Mickey Fadness (Sr. • Eau Claire) drew a base-on-balls to give UW-Oshkosh the victory.

The Blue Devils were held to just two hits, getting a Drew Anderson single during the eighth and a Jon Schoch single in the ninth. Giebel and Josh Anderson paced UW-Stout with three hits on the day.

Titan pitchers recorded 22 outs before allowing a hit in the second contest. Just like game one, Kannenberg fired a flawless ninth to pick up the win. Aaron Dressnandt (So. • Mukwonago) accounted for two hitless innings before Troy Mrkvicka (So. • Greendale) pitched the next 5.1 frames, surrendering a pair of base knocks.

Chris Lammert took the loss, giving up three runs after walking five in 3.1 innings. Tyler Hamann started and spent five frames on the mound, allowing six hits and a pair of runs. Four of the 10 hits yielded by UW-Stout came off the bat of Nolan Fadness.

UW-Oshkosh will oppose the Blue Devils again on Sunday (May 2).
