Box Score 2 Mickey Fadness had a game-winning homer among his team-high four hits as the UW-Oshkosh baseball team split a doubleheader with UW-Stout on Sunday (May 2) at Tiedemann Field. Game two marked the Titans' (15-19/8-12 WIAC) home finale of the 2010 season.
Fadness put the Titans ahead for good in the eighth inning of the opener as they held on for a 12-11 win – their third straight one-run triumph. UW-Oshkosh made a ninth-inning comeback in game two before UW-Stout took a 9-6 decision in 10 innings.
The Blue Devils (10-23/5-15 WIAC) got single runs in each of the first two frames during the opener. Following a stolen base, Josh Anderson posted an RBI single. A Chris Sill single pulled the Blue Devils even at 2-2 in the top of the second.
Derek Hiroskey (Jr. • Kimberly) and Kyle Kannenberg (Sr. • Oshkosh) each drilled run-scoring singles in both the second and third innings. UW-Oshkosh also received scores on hits from Blake Berger (Jr. • Star Prairie) and Mickey Fadness (Sr. • Eau Claire) to leave the second with a 6-2 advantage.
The Titan attack kept coming in the third as Tyler Kamps (Fr. • Appleton) followed a base-on-balls with a triple. Another walk and a Mickey Fadness single during the fourth set the table for Lucas Wirth (Sr. • Omro), who drove a three-run bomb to right field to go ahead, 10-2.
UW-Stout got a pair of early walks to start its eight-run rally in the fifth frame. The Blue Devils got run-scoring singles by Adam Stuessel and Jon Schoch to make it 10-4. With two men on, Sill crushed a three-run homer. To cap the comeback and tie the game, AJ Yusten ripped a bases-clearing double into the right-centerfield gap.
Troy Mrkvicka (So. • Greendale) came through with a single to put the Titans in front during the sixth, but Jake Duske equaled the score again with a solo home run to lead off the eighth. UW-Oshkosh then captured the victory on Mickey Fadness' solo shot with one out in the bottom half.
Kannenberg recorded the pitching victory for the third consecutive game after he allowed one run in the final 4.2 frames. Sean Grabig (Fr. • Howard) started on the hill and was charged with seven earned runs over 4.1 innings.
The loss belonged to Dan Britts, who yielded the deciding run while notching seven outs. Russ Jiskra surrendered six runs in the first two innings before Chris Anderson gave up five runs during the next 3.2 frames.
UW-Oshkosh marked during the opening inning of the nightcap, but the Blue Devils responded with a pair of runs in the second to take the lead. One run came home on a wild pitch, while UW-Stout tacked on a sacrifice fly to go up, 2-1.
After two men were out in the fourth, the Titans got two singles. Derek Layton (Fr. • Cross Plains) then stepped up and smoked a two-run double. The Blue Devils drew a walk and hit-by-pitch to respond in the fifth, as Duske drew a base-on-balls to force in a run and tie the contest at 3.
During the sixth inning, Adam Stuessel singled and stole second base to help UW-Stout get a man in scoring position. A Sill groundout then brought him home. The Titans used a similar pattern to force extra innings with two outs in the ninth. Nolan Fadness (Jr. • Eau Claire) walked, stole a base and came in on Kamps' infield single.
UW-Stout's 10th frame included a pair of Titan errors, with one letting in a run. The Blue Devils then got one more on a Brian Giebel single and three on Duske's bomb to left field to make it 9-4.
Brandon Loertscher and Matt Phipps each pitched five innings for the victors. Phipps recorded three strikeouts and allowed one earned run to take the win. Loertscher surrendered two earned runs on three hits and three walks.
The loss fell on Kannenberg, who has taken the decision in six of the Titans' last seven games. He yielded seven runs (two earned) over the last six frames, following Matt Wells (Fr. • Little Chute), who gave up two runs on four hits in four innings.
UW-Oshkosh, which got its two extra-inning runs on a fielding error, was led by the four hits of Mickey Fadness on the day. Giebel and Sill each posted five hits during the doubleheader to pace the Blue Devils.
The Titans take to the diamond on Friday (May 7) at UW-La Crosse.
