Titans Pull Away To Sink Lakers

UW-Oshkosh used a 17-4 scoring run midway through the second half to gain control and post a 72-62 victory over the Silver Lake College men's basketball team on Tuesday (Dec. 17) in Kolf Sports Center. Alex Olson kicked off the run with a three-pointer that put the Titans out front, 46-45. UW-Oshkosh continued to tack on points over the next five minutes, capping the run with a dunk by Max Schebel.

The teams were separated by less than four points for most of the opening period. Kyle Lundberg drained a three-point shot to put Silver Lake College ahead, 10-7. John Duke then gave the Lakers a 22-17 advantage with his long-range jumper.

UW-Oshkosh chipped away at its deficit and scored five points in the last minute of the first half. Riley Vander Wyst buried a three-point shot and Andre Wallace followed with a put-back at the horn to make it a 26-26 score.

Silver Lake College (3-13) bolted out of halftime with a 10-2 scoring run. Duke knocked down a pair of three-point shots, including one that gave his team a 36-28 lead with 17:06 remaining.

UW-Oshkosh (2-6) responded with seven unanswered points. Lay-ups from Jade Royston, Wallace and Jake Laihinen made things close before Josh Hopfensperger drilled a three-point shot to tie it at 37. The Lakers held a 45-43 lead before the Titans took over.

Olson led the Titans with 12 points, while Laihinen added 11 and Royston 10. UW-Oshkosh's 40 rebounds featured nine from Wallace and eight from Royston.

Silver Lake College was paced by Duke's 15 points and nine rebounds. The Lakers also received 12 points from Lundberg, 10 points from Derek Domino and 11 rebounds from Darius Barnes.

UW-Oshkosh, which has won all five meetings between the teams, shot 38.1 percent (24-63) from the field, 31 (9-29) behind the three-point arc and 83.3 from the free-throw line. The Titans turned the basketball over nine times.

Silver Lake College shot 35.1 percent (20-57) from the field, including 27.3 (6-22) behind the three-point line. The Lakers made 16 of their 19 free throws (84.2 percent). Silver Lake College collected 38 rebounds and tallied 15 turnovers.

The Titans battle North Park University (Ill.) on Saturday (Dec. 21) in Kolf Sports Center.
