Box Score 2 UW-Stevens Point relievers totaled 12 strikeouts during a sweep of the UW-Oshkosh baseball team on Wednesday (May 8) in Stevens Point. The Pointers, ranked 19th, won for the 14th time in their last 15 games.
In the opener, UW-Stevens Point got 7.2 innings from its bullpen for a 12-8 victory. Three different men hit a two-run homer as the Pointers ran away with game two, 11-3.
UW-Oshkosh (23-12/12-10 WIAC) and UW-Stevens Point (32-8/19-5 WIAC) will meet in the first round of the WIAC Tournament on Saturday (May 11) in Whitewater. UW-Whitewater and UW-La Crosse matchup in the other contest.
The Titans got off to a great start with three runs in their first at-bat. After Tyler Kamps drilled a solo homer, Michael Polcyn tripled and Bobby Kachel hit a sacrifice fly.
The powerful Pointers erased that deficit within four batters. Following two singles and a hit-by-pitch, Jimmy Coady connected for a grand slam over the RF fence. A pair of UW-Oshkosh errors helped extend the margin to 7-3 during the second frame.
Kachel forced in a run when he was hit by a pitch in the fourth inning. Robbie Kleman followed with a two-run single that made it 7-6.
UW-Stevens Point pulled away with two runs during both the fourth and eighth frames. Harry Steldt and Clint Rose tallied a RBI in each inning.
Nash Bell earned the win, pitching 3.1 innings with no runs allowed. Jacob Herbst recorded the final six outs, fanning three batters. UW-Oshkosh had Brock Guetzke yield five ER in two frames for the defeat.
During the second contest, the Pointers got a two-run homer by Coady to take a 4-3 lead in the fifth. Bobby Gregorich and Sean Gerber then blasted two-run shots of their own in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively.
Ben Messenger went five innings (3 ER) to get the win. UW-Stevens Point completed the two-hitter with scoreless frames by Nick Prebelski, Brad Stroik, Luke Watson and David VanVliet.
UW-Oshkosh got on the scoreboard with Polcyn's RBI groundout during the first. Kamps walloped a two-run homer in the third, but that was the Titans' last hit of the day.
James Lacy surrendered four ER in three innings for the loss. Chad Wyss was the second of five UW-Oshkosh pitchers, and he got five outs without yielding a run.
